Abaya with a train: how long, and is it practical?

How an abaya with a train or trailing tail is cut, how much train is wearable, what it means for fabric, lining and cleaning, and the occasions where it works.

Wearable, if the train is modest

An abaya with a train has a back hem that is longer than the front and trails on the floor behind you. A sweep of a few centimetres, or a short train of roughly 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12 inches), is wearable for an evening indoors. Anything longer looks lovely in photographs but needs managing every time you walk, sit or turn.

It is a dressy detail, chosen for an occasion rather than daily life, and it changes the cutting, the fabric quantity and the cleaning.

How the train is cut

There are three common ways to make an abaya trail, and each gives a slightly different line.

  • Extended back panels: the back pieces are simply cut longer and curved, so the hem rises smoothly from the back to meet the front at the sides. This is the simplest and most natural-looking train.
  • An inserted panel: a triangular piece of fabric, called a godet, is set into the centre back seam, adding fullness and length that ripple when you move.
  • A separate layer: a length of lighter fabric falls from the shoulders or back yoke over the abaya, often in chiffon. It can be made detachable with snaps or hooks.

Fabric, lining and weight

A train uses noticeably more fabric than a floor-length abaya, because the back panels or the inserted piece are cut longer and wider. The exact amount depends on the train length, your size and the width of the fabric. It also adds weight at the back, which can pull the shoulders backwards if the fabric is heavy, so fluid crepes and lighter fabrics usually work better than stiff or dense ones.

If the abaya is lined, the lining usually stops at floor length rather than following the train, so the trailing part is a single layer that moves freely. Our guide to lined and unlined abayas explains when a lining earns its place.

Cleaning and storing a train

Whatever the floor holds, the train collects: dust, crumbs, damp and the odd footprint. Brush or shake it after each wear, spot-clean marks on the hem promptly and follow the fabric label for washing. A long train is awkward to wash at home, so many people have it cleaned professionally.

Hang it on a sturdy hanger with the train folded loosely over the bar, or loop it up with a ribbon sewn inside the hem, so it is not crushed on the wardrobe floor. Our article on pressing and storing abayas has more on hanging long pieces.

Where a train suits, and where it does not

A train belongs to occasions with smooth floors and space around you: an evening dinner, a formal gathering or a wedding where you are a guest. Our wedding guest abaya article covers the rest of that outfit. It is awkward on stairs, in crowds, outdoors, in cars and anywhere people may step on it behind you.

Measure the front length first, with the shoes you will wear, as shown in abaya length to the floor, then decide how far the back should extend. We make abayas to measure; share a photo of the train you like through Send Your Design, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

How do I walk in an abaya with a train?

Walk normally and let it follow you, and avoid stepping backwards. On stairs, gather the train in one hand and lift it slightly. When you turn, a small step to the side keeps you from treading on it.

Can a train be bustled up after an event?

Yes, a small loop or button inside the back can lift the train to floor length when you want to move freely. Ask for it in your enquiry so the hook and loop are placed for your height.

Does a train make an abaya look longer and taller?

It lengthens the outline from behind and from the side, which gives a tall, flowing look. From the front the abaya looks like a normal floor-length one.
