The Gilded Seam: Custom Women’s Stitching

Delivered to the USA

Custom Stitching for Customers in the USA

The Gilded Seam makes women’s clothing to your own measurements in Pakistan and ships it to addresses across the United States. We can supply the fabric, or stitch an unstitched suit you already own, and every design detail and measurement is agreed in writing before anything is cut. There is no store, studio or tailor to visit in the US: you order online, from a single suit, give your measurements in inches, and the finished outfit is shipped to your door.

Quick answers

Ordering from the USA

The questions customers ask before their first order, answered for your country.

What can I order?

You can order made-to-measure women’s clothing: three-piece and two-piece salwar kameez, kurtas and kameez, co-ords, Eid outfits, casual party wear and Western pieces such as dresses, skirts, tops and pants. Everything is cut to your measurements, and embroidery can be added as embellishment on an outfit we are stitching. An unstitched lawn suit from Devon Avenue or Jackson Heights, or one ordered from a Pakistani brand’s website, can be stitched too.

Can I order just one suit?

Yes. Our minimum order is one suit, made to your agreed measurements and design. We do not offer free samples, so your first order is a real outfit made for you, with everything it includes set out in your written quote. If you want several outfits, say for Eid and a few weekend dawats, list them all in one inquiry and the quote covers each one.

Can you provide the fabric?

Yes. With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric and make the outfit, so you have nothing to ship overseas and no export paperwork to fill out. Tell us the color, weight and occasion, whether that is breezy lawn for a Houston summer or warm khaddar for a Chicago winter, and the fabric is agreed with you in writing before cutting.

Can I send my own fabric?

Yes, subject to fabric suitability and sufficient quantity. This is our Stitching Only service, and it has two separate shipping stages: you ship the fabric from the US to Pakistan as an international export, and the finished garment is then shipped back to you. Please contact us before sending anything, so we can confirm the fabric, the quantity and the shipping arrangements.

How do I submit my measurements?

Enter your measurements on the quote form, in inches or centimeters. Inches are the usual choice in the US and work perfectly well, so measure with the tape you have and keep to one unit throughout. Please give body measurements rather than a US dress size; the size guide shows where each one is taken.

How are the design and fit agreed?

The design details and your measurements are agreed in writing before anything is cut. There are no in-person appointments or try-ons anywhere in the US, so the neckline, sleeves, lengths, pant style and any lining are all confirmed in your written quote, and we ask about anything that is unclear. If you own a kameez that sits just right, its measurements and a photo are a helpful guide.

Where is the clothing made?

Our garments are made in Pakistan and shipped internationally. We have no store, studio or production anywhere in the United States, so every order is arranged online and shipped to your address, whether that is in Queens, suburban Chicago or a small town far from any South Asian shopping street.

How are production time and shipping costs confirmed?

Both are confirmed in your written quote before you agree to anything. They depend on the outfit and, for Stitching Only, on when your fabric reaches us in Pakistan, so we do not publish fixed times or promise delivery dates. If you are working toward Eid or a family event, put the date on the form so it is taken into account in your quote.

Who handles import charges?

We do. Your written quote includes delivery to your US address and any import duties, taxes and customs fees, so there is nothing extra to pay when your package arrives. US Customs and Border Protection says duty-free de minimis treatment is suspended for shipments from all countries, so imports of any value can be subject to duties, taxes and fees, and these are covered in your quote.

How do I request a quote?

Use the Request a Custom Quote form at thegildedseam.com/quote; opened from this page, it has the United States already selected as your country. Your first inquiry only needs your name, email, city, the garment, the quantity, Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only, design images and notes, and your full shipping address is taken when the order goes ahead.

In detail

Fabric, delivery and sizes in the USA

Stitching Only: shipping fabric from the US to Pakistan

Unstitched suits are easy to find near the big South Asian shopping streets. Devon Avenue in Chicago; 74th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens; Oak Tree Road in Edison and Iselin, New Jersey; Hillcroft Avenue in Houston’s Mahatma Gandhi District; and Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia, near Los Angeles, all sell Pakistani brand packs, Indian dress material and fabric by the yard. Farther from those streets, many people order unstitched collections online from Pakistani brands that sell to US customers.

With Stitching Only, there are two separate shipping stages: your fabric leaves the US for Pakistan as an international export shipment, and the finished outfit later ships back to you as an import, with delivery and any US import charges included in your quote. Before you ship anything, send us photos and details so we can confirm the fabric is suitable, that there is enough of it for your design, and how to send it. Our guides to photographing fabric for a quote and shipping your fabric for stitching cover the details. Then:

  • Use a tracked international service, from USPS or a courier such as UPS, FedEx or DHL, and keep the tracking number.
  • Complete the customs declaration accurately, describing the contents plainly (for example “unstitched cotton lawn suit, three pieces”) and giving their real value.
  • Put your name and quote reference inside the package, so it is matched to your order when it arrives.

Delivery to the USA and US import charges

Your finished outfit is made in Pakistan and shipped to your US address, so it enters the country as an import. US Customs and Border Protection’s fact sheet explains that duty-free de minimis treatment is suspended for shipments from all countries, so imports of any value can be subject to duties, taxes and fees. The suspension took effect on August 29, 2025, and a 2026 White House order continued it.

In other words, a low value on its own no longer means a package enters duty-free. With us, any duties, taxes and fees are already included in your written quote, together with delivery to your address, so there is nothing extra to pay when your package arrives. The quote also confirms the production time, and if a carrier ever asks you for payment on delivery, contact us before paying anything. We do not give tax advice, so for questions about your own circumstances, CBP is the place to start. Our guides to what your written quote includes and ordering made to measure from the USA cover the rest.

Would you rather not ship anything yourself? With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric, so there is one international shipment instead of two, and how it works shows every stage.

Inches, US sizes and the names you’ll see

Most US tape measures are marked in inches, and the quote form accepts inches or centimeters, so there is nothing to convert; just keep to one unit. Please give body measurements rather than a dress size: US sizes are numbered differently from UK sizes, our size chart follows UK sizing, and Pakistani and Indian brands use their own S, M and L charts. The size guide shows each measurement, and our guides to UK, EU and US dress sizes and measuring in inches or centimeters explain the rest.

In the US the outfit is most often spelled salwar kameez; in Pakistan, shalwar kameez is more usual. Both mean the same set: a kameez (the tunic), a shalwar (loose pants gathered at the ankle) and usually a dupatta. Many people simply say Pakistani suit or Indian suit, and desi clothes covers South Asian clothing in general. In Indian stores you may also hear churidar pajama for the narrow, gathered pant style.

Brand packs list a “trouser” length, which is the fabric for the shalwar or pants, and US stores sell fabric by the yard; if you buy it that way, note the length and the width of the bolt. Our guide to how much fabric a three-piece suit needs helps you buy enough, and custom stitching shows the styles we make.

From New York to Los Angeles: cities, climate and Eid

We ship to addresses across the US, and our city pages cover the shopping streets, weather and everyday dressing in New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Atlanta and Edison, New Jersey, and in more cities from Philadelphia and Detroit to Austin. Ordering works the same way from anywhere else in the country. Ordering from somewhere else? See all our locations.

The US spans every kind of climate, so your city shapes an order more than it would in a smaller country. Houston, Atlanta, Dallas and Miami call for lawn and cotton most of the year, cut with a little ease (summer outfits for hot weather), while winters in Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Boston and Minneapolis are khaddar, karandi and marina weather (winter fabrics compared). Los Angeles sits in between, with linen and cotton for most months, and foggy San Francisco and damp Seattle are places for layers.

Eid moves about eleven days earlier each year, so over time it lands in every season. If your own fabric has to reach Pakistan first, it makes two international trips, so give us your date early and plan with the Eid outfit timeline. When you are ready, request a quote for the USA.

FAQ

More questions from the USA

Measuring guide: how to measure. The whole process: how ordering works.

Do you have a store or tailor in New York, Chicago or anywhere else in the US?

No. There is no store, studio, showroom or tailor anywhere in the United States, and nobody measures you in person. Everything is ordered online, made in Pakistan and shipped to your address, with your measurements and design details agreed in writing before cutting.

Is shipping fabric to Pakistan like mailing a package within the US?

No. It is an international export shipment, so it needs a customs declaration that describes the contents accurately and gives their real value, and a tracked service is the safest choice. Only ship it once we have confirmed the fabric, quantity and arrangements with you. The finished outfit then comes back as a separate shipment, with delivery and any US import charges included in your quote.

Can you stitch an Indian suit bought on Oak Tree Road or Devon Avenue?

Yes, subject to fabric suitability and sufficient quantity. Indian dress material, Pakistani brand packs and fabric by the yard can all be stitched with Stitching Only. Contact us with photos before shipping anything, so we can confirm the fabric, the quantity and how to send it.
