Abaya vs jalabiya: which is which?
Abaya vs jalabiya explained: the jalabiya is a decorated full-length dress worn on its own, the abaya is the layer worn over clothes, and how the two pair up.
InspirationThe short answer
A jalabiya is a dress and an abaya is a cover. The jalabiya is a loose, full-length dress, usually colourful and decorated, that is worn on its own at home, when hosting and at gatherings. The abaya is the plain or lightly detailed outer layer that goes over whatever you are wearing when you leave the house.
That is the working difference in the Gulf, where both words are in daily use. Online, sellers label almost any long, loose garment as an abaya, a jalabiya or a kaftan, so how a garment is cut and worn tells you more than its name.
What a jalabiya is
The word is also written jalabiyah, jellabiya or galabeya, and it covers a family of long, loose robes worn across the Arab world by men and women. In the Gulf, a woman’s jalabiya has come to mean something more specific: a dress for being seen in. It is pulled on over the head, falls straight or gently flared from shoulder to floor, and carries its decoration on the neckline, the front panel and the cuffs.
Jalabiya fabrics are soft and often printed or richly coloured: cotton and viscose for the house, crepe, satin, chiffon or velvet for evenings. It is a natural choice for Ramadan evenings, Eid at home and henna nights. A plain cotton one is simply a comfortable house dress.
How the abaya differs
An abaya is cut to go over other clothes, so it has more ease than a dress and is usually opaque and plain. Many abayas open down the front, which no dress needs to do; our guide to open-front and closed abayas covers that choice.
- Job: the jalabiya is the outfit; the abaya covers the outfit.
- Ease: a jalabiya is cut for the body with a slip or light layer beneath; an abaya leaves room for a full set of clothes.
- Front: a jalabiya is closed, with a neck slit or short zip so it passes over the head; an abaya may be fully open.
- Decoration: a jalabiya is decorated to be seen across a room; an abaya keeps any detail to the cuffs, edges or back.
- Colour and cloth: jalabiyas come in every colour and print; abayas lean towards dark, matte, opaque cloth.
- Sleeves: jalabiya sleeves are often wide or elbow length; abaya sleeves reach the wrist and stay there.
Where the two overlap
The overlap is real. A closed abaya in a coloured crepe with an embroidered front is, to most eyes, a jalabiya you can wear outdoors, and “kaftan” is used for much the same shape, as our article on the kaftan-style kameez shows. Ignore the name and check three things: is it worn alone, how much room does it have, and how does it open?
Wearing the two together
The usual pairing is simple: the jalabiya is the dress for the gathering and the abaya is how you get there. You arrive in the abaya and, where the setting is right for it, take it off indoors. Two practical points follow. The abaya needs enough ease and sleeve width to slide over the jalabiya’s decoration without catching it, and it should be long enough to cover the jalabiya’s hem in the shoes you will wear. An open-front abaya is easier to put on over embellishment than one that goes over the head.
If the jalabiya has wide or heavily decorated sleeves, say so when you order the abaya that will go over it. Abayas for Ramadan evenings looks at the same pairing for iftars and visits.
Having either one made to measure
We make abayas to measure, in our fabric or yours, each quoted individually. A jalabiya is not a named item on our quote form, but it is a long dress, and you can request one through Send Your Design: upload a photo or sketch, describe the fabric, length and neckline, and we tell you in the written quote whether and how we can make it. Embroidery is offered on outfits we stitch, from delicate to statement. If you have a particular decoration in mind, ask for it in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.
Start with the design quote form and say which you want: a dress to wear on its own, a layer to go over clothes, or both planned as a pair. Everything is agreed in writing before cutting, and making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment.
Common questions
Is a jalabiya the same as a kaftan?
The words overlap and shops use them loosely. In Gulf usage a jalabiya is a long decorated dress with simple or set-in sleeves, while kaftan usually suggests a wider cut with broad sleeves that are part of the body. Check the photos and measurements, not the name.
Can an abaya be worn as a dress?
A closed abaya in an opaque fabric can be worn as a dress over a slip or light layer, and many women do this. An open-front abaya needs a full outfit or an inner dress beneath it, because the front parts as you walk.
What do you wear under a jalabiya?
Usually very little: a slip or a light cotton layer, plus leggings or thin trousers if the fabric is sheer or the slits are high. Because it is the outfit itself, it is cut closer than an abaya and has no room for bulky clothes.
