Neckline (Gala) Designs for Kameez and Kurtas

Also called gala

Quick answer

Choose a neckline (gala) by four things: how it frames your face and collarbone, how it sits under a dupatta, how deep you want it, and the fabric. Round, band-collar and round-with-slit necklines are the easiest everyday choices; V, square and sweetheart necklines suit Eid and gatherings. Tell us the shape and the front neck depth, or choose “advise me”.

Why the neckline matters

The neckline is the first thing people notice on a kameez or kurta. It frames your face, changes how broad or narrow your shoulders look, and decides whether an outfit reads as everyday, office or Eid. On a ready-made suit the brand chose it for you; with an unstitched suit or fabric you choose the shape, the depth and the finish.

Most gala designs are one of a handful of shapes, or a combination of two, such as a V with a band collar. The guides below explain each one with a drawing, what it suits, the fabrics that work and how it’s finished.

How to choose

These are guidelines, not rules. The neckline you feel comfortable in always looks better than one picked from a chart.

  • Face and neck: open shapes (V, scoop, sweetheart) add length to a round face or a short neck; round, boat and square necklines add width to a long, narrow face.
  • Shoulders: V and sweetheart necklines draw the eye inwards on broad shoulders; boat and square necklines add width to narrow or sloping shoulders.
  • Dupatta and hijab: higher round necks and band collars sit cleanly under a dupatta or hijab and need no adjusting through the day.
  • Occasion: round, band collar and slit necks for home, work and campus; square, V and sweetheart for Eid, dawats and gatherings.
  • Fabric: soft lawn and cotton take any shape; thick khaddar and karandi look best in simple necklines; sheer chiffon needs a neat, lined or bound edge so seam allowances don’t show through.

Front and back neck depth

A name alone isn’t enough, because one tailor’s “round neck” is another’s scoop. The number that makes it precise is the front neck depth (gale ki gehrai): measured from the base of your neck at the shoulder line down to where you want the neckline to sit. The easiest way to choose a depth is to measure a kameez whose neckline you like.

The back neck can be high and plain or have its own shape and depth. If you want a deeper or shaped back neck, add it to the notes on your quote. Our measuring guide shows where to measure.

Finishing and embroidered neck pieces

A neckline can be finished with a plain facing, piping, lace or a narrow contrast band. Many unstitched suits include an embroidered neckline piece that is already worked to a set shape; in that case the embroidery largely decides the neckline, and the depth and width can usually change only a little. Send a photo and we’ll tell you what’s possible before anything is cut.

Not sure? Choose “advise me” on the stitching quote form and we’ll suggest a neckline that suits the fabric, the embroidery and the occasion. Whatever you choose is written into your design approval before cutting.

Common questions

Which gala design suits a round face?

A V-neck, a deeper scoop or a round neck with a slit usually suits a round face, because the vertical line draws the eye down and lengthens the face.

How deep should a kameez neckline be?

There’s no single right depth. The simplest way is to measure a kameez whose neckline you like, from the base of the neck at the shoulder line to the lowest point at the front, and give us that number.

Can I change the neckline on an unstitched suit with an embroidered neck piece?

Usually only a little. The embroidery is worked to a set shape, so the depth and width can move slightly but the shape stays. Send a photo and we’ll tell you what’s possible.
