Quick answers

Ordering from the UK

The questions customers ask before their first order, answered for your country.

What can I order?

You can order made-to-measure women’s clothing: three-piece and two-piece shalwar kameez, kurtas and kameez, co-ords, Eid outfits, casual party wear and Western pieces such as dresses, skirts, tops and trousers. Everything is cut to your measurements, and embroidery can be added as embellishment on an outfit we are stitching. An unstitched lawn or khaddar suit bought on a UK high street or from a brand’s UK website can be stitched too.

Can I order just one suit?

Yes. Our minimum order is one suit, made to your agreed measurements and design. We do not offer free samples, so your first order is a real outfit made for you, with everything it includes set out in your written quote. If you would like several outfits, for example before Eid, list them in one enquiry and the quote covers each one.

Can you provide the fabric?

Yes. With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric and make the outfit, so nothing needs to be sent from the UK. Tell us the colour, fabric and occasion you have in mind, and the fabric is agreed with you in writing before cutting; only the finished outfit then travels to your UK address.

Can I send my own fabric?

Yes, subject to fabric suitability and sufficient quantity. This is our Stitching Only service, and it has two separate shipping stages: you send the fabric from the UK to Pakistan, and the finished garment is then shipped to you. Please contact us before sending anything, so we can confirm the fabric, the quantity and the sending arrangements.

How do I submit my measurements?

Enter your measurements on the quote form, in centimetres or inches. Centimetres are the usual choice in the UK, but inches are accepted too, so use whichever your tape shows and keep to one unit throughout. The size guide shows where each measurement is taken.

How are the design and fit agreed?

The design details and your measurements are agreed in writing before anything is cut. There are no in-person appointments or try-ons in the UK: the neckline, sleeves, lengths, trouser style and any lining are confirmed in your written quote, and we ask about anything that is unclear.

Where is the clothing made?

Our garments are made in Pakistan and shipped internationally. We have no shop, studio or production anywhere in the UK, so every order is arranged online and delivered to your address, whether that is in London, Glasgow, Cardiff or Belfast.

How are production time and shipping costs confirmed?

Both are confirmed in your written quote before you agree to anything. They depend on the outfit and, for Stitching Only, on when your fabric reaches us, so we do not publish fixed times or promise delivery dates. If you are working towards Eid or a family occasion, put the date on the form so it is taken into account in your quote.

Who handles import charges?

We do. Your written quote includes delivery to your UK address and any import duties, taxes and customs fees, so there is nothing extra to pay when your parcel arrives. GOV.UK says VAT is charged on goods sent from outside the UK and customs duty on goods worth more than £135, and these are covered in your quote.

How do I request a quote?

Use the Request a Custom Quote form at thegildedseam.com/quote; opened from this page, it has the United Kingdom already selected as your country. The first enquiry only needs your name, email, city, the garment, quantity, service option, design images and notes, and your full delivery address is taken when the order goes ahead.

Two ways to order

Our fabric, or yours

Both are made to your measurements. The minimum order is one suit, and we don’t offer free samples.

    • Confirm suitability and quantity before sending
    • Minimum order one suit

Stitching Only: sending fabric from the UK to Pakistan

Britain’s South Asian shopping streets make it easy to buy an unstitched suit. Green Street in east London, The Broadway in Southall, Stratford Road in Birmingham, Wilmslow Road in Manchester and Belgrave Road in Leicester all sell brand packs, Indian dress material and fabric by the metre, and many Pakistani brands sell online to UK addresses.

With Stitching Only, that fabric travels to Pakistan to be cut and stitched, and the finished outfit comes to you as a separate delivery. Before you post anything, send us photos and details so we can confirm the fabric is suitable, that there is enough of it for your design, and how to send it. Then:

  • Use a tracked international service, from the Post Office or a courier, and keep the tracking number.
  • Complete the customs declaration accurately, describing the contents plainly (for example “unstitched cotton lawn suit, three pieces”) and giving their real value.
  • Put your name and quote reference inside the parcel, so it is matched to your order when it arrives.

Delivery to the UK and import charges

Your finished outfit is made in Pakistan and shipped to your UK address, so it arrives as an import. GOV.UK explains that VAT is charged on goods sent from outside the UK, that customs duty applies to goods worth more than £135, and that the delivery company contacts the recipient to collect any VAT, duty or fees. With us, those charges are already included in your written quote, together with delivery to your address, so there is nothing extra to pay when your parcel arrives.

Your quote also confirms the production time before you agree to anything. If a courier ever asks you for payment on delivery, contact us before paying anything. We do not give tax advice, so for questions about your own circumstances the GOV.UK page is the place to start. Our guide to what your written quote includes shows what to look for, and how it works walks through every stage.

Would you rather not send anything? With Fabric + Stitching we supply the agreed fabric, so only one parcel makes the journey: the finished outfit on its way to you.

Sizes, units and names in the UK

Most tape measures sold in the UK show both centimetres and inches, and the quote form accepts either, so use whichever you are comfortable with and keep to it. Please give body measurements rather than a dress size: a UK 12 in one shop can differ from the next, UK and US numbering differ, and Pakistani brands use their own S, M and L charts. Our size guide shows each measurement, and the guide to UK, EU and US dress sizes explains why a size label is a poor guide for a kameez.

You will see the outfit written as shalwar kameez, salwar kameez or simply “a suit”, and an unstitched three-piece is often sold as a lawn suit or a brand pack. They all describe the same kind of order: a kameez, trousers and usually a dupatta, cut to your measurements. If you are buying by the metre, our guide to how much fabric a three-piece suit needs helps you buy the right amount, and custom stitching shows the styles we make.

Across the UK, city by city

We deliver to addresses across the UK, and our city pages cover the shopping streets, weather and everyday dressing in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, Leicester, Glasgow, Luton, Slough and Blackburn. There are pages too for Edinburgh and Cardiff, for Pennine towns such as Huddersfield and Oldham, and for the Midlands, from Coventry to Nottingham.

The British weather shapes an order more than the postcode does: lawn and cotton for the warmest weeks, and khaddar, karandi or marina for a damp winter. Our winter fabrics guide compares them, and the Eid outfit timeline helps you start early enough, especially if your own fabric has to reach Pakistan first. Ordering from somewhere else? FAQ

More questions from the UK

Measuring guide: how to measure. The whole process: how ordering works.

Do you have a shop in London or anywhere else in the UK?

No. There is no shop, studio or showroom anywhere in the UK. Everything is ordered online, made in Pakistan and delivered to your address, with your measurements and design details agreed in writing before cutting.

Can I order an Eid outfit from the UK?

Yes. Eid outfits are one of the garments we make, in lawn for a warm Eid and heavier fabrics when it falls in the colder months. Put your date on the quote form and start early, particularly with Stitching Only, because your fabric and the finished outfit travel separately. Production time and shipping costs are confirmed in your written quote.

Can you stitch an Indian suit bought in Southall or Leicester?

Yes, subject to fabric suitability and sufficient quantity. Indian dress material, Pakistani brand packs and fabric by the metre can all be stitched with Stitching Only. Contact us with photos before posting anything, so we can confirm the fabric, the quantity and how to send it.
