Hooded abaya: is a hood practical over a hijab?
Is a hooded abaya practical over a hijab? Hood size, lining and weight, attached versus detachable hoods, and when a hood is worth adding to a made-to-measure abaya.
InspirationPractical, if it is sized for the hijab
A hood on an abaya is practical over a hijab when it is cut large enough to go over the hijab without crushing it, and light enough not to drag the neckline backwards. A hood sized for a bare head, which is how most ready-made hoods are drafted, sits tight over a wrapped scarf and pulls at the throat. Cut for your own head and hijab style, it can be a genuinely useful layer in wind, drizzle and cold.
Sizing a hood over a hijab
Hijab styles add very different amounts of bulk: a simple wrap adds little, while an underscarf, pins and a voluminous style add a lot. Measure with the hijab on, styled the way you usually wear it outdoors.
- Hood height: from the base of the neck at one side, up over the top of the head and down to the base of the neck on the other side.
- Hood depth: from your forehead hairline, over the crown, to the nape of the neck.
- Face opening: decide whether you want the hood to frame the face closely or sit back loosely. A deeper hood falls back more easily.
- Neckline: the hood is sewn to the neckline, so the neckline size and shape change how the hood sits. Our guide to abaya collars and necklines shows the choices.
Weight, lining and the backward pull
A hood is a lot of fabric hanging off the back of the neck when it is down. In a heavy cloth, or with a full lining, it pulls the whole abaya backwards and the front neckline presses on your throat. A few choices keep that in check:
- Line the hood in a light fabric, or face only the front edge, rather than doubling a heavy cloth.
- Keep the hood in proportion: a deep, decorative hood looks dramatic but weighs more.
- Choose a neckline that sits close to the base of the neck, and consider a fastening at the chest on an open abaya so the fronts anchor each other.
- In winter fabrics, a lined hood is warmer; our page on lined or unlined abayas explains the trade-off.
Attached or detachable
An attached hood is simplest and looks the most finished, with the seam hidden inside the neckline. Its drawback is that the hood is always there, under a bag strap, against a car seat and in photos. A detachable hood fastens with buttons, press studs or a zip around the neckline, so the abaya can be worn plain in warm weather and hooded on cold days. The fastening shows a little when the hood is off, and a collar or band can be designed to cover it.
A hood-like shawl collar is a third option: it lies flat as a collar and can be pulled up loosely over the head in wind. It is less protective but less bulky.
When a hood earns its place
A hood is most useful on a winter abaya for UK and US weather, for travel, for school runs in wind and rain and for walks. It is less useful in hot climates, under a backpack, or on a dressy abaya where you would never raise it. If you want a hood mainly for the look, a smaller decorative one is lighter and easier to live with.
We make abayas to measure, and a hood is something to describe or show in a photo and ask for in your quote; we confirm what works on your fabric. Read how to design your own abaya from a photo, then send your measurements, including the hood measurements over your hijab, through the design quote form.
Common questions
Will a hood stay up over a slippery hijab?
A silky hijab and a smooth hood lining can slide against each other, so the hood tends to fall back in wind. A cotton or jersey hijab, or a hood lined in a matte fabric, holds better.
Can a hood be added to an abaya I already own?
We do not alter existing clothes. If you want a hooded abaya, the hood is planned as part of a new made-to-measure abaya, so the neckline and balance are designed for it from the start.
Does a hood make an abaya look casual?
Often, yes, especially a sporty hood in a soft fabric. A hood cut in the abaya fabric with a neat edge and no drawstring looks dressier and suits a coat-style abaya well.
