How much fabric for a dhoti shalwar?

How much fabric for a dhoti salwar: typical metres for a soft or deep drape, why drape depth and fabric width change the amount, and what measurements to send.

From 2.5 to about 4 metres

A dhoti shalwar usually takes about 2.5 to 3.5 metres (2.75 to 3.8 yards) of 44 to 45 inch fabric: around 2.5 metres for a soft, shallow drape and 3 to 3.5 for a deep one, rising to about 4 for a very dramatic cowl. On 58 to 60 inch fabric, allow roughly 2 to 2.75 metres.

These are typical figures for an average height. Your measurements, the depth of drape you want and the fabric decide the real amount, and we confirm it in your quote.

What makes it a dhoti shalwar

A dhoti shalwar is relaxed through the seat and narrow at the ankle, usually finished with a cuff, with soft folds falling across the front like a wrapped dhoti. Those folds come from extra width and length built into the front panels, which are then pleated or gathered into the waist so the surplus drops into cowls. It is a cousin of the classic shalwar, and our trouser styles guide shows where it sits among the others.

Why the drape depth drives the amount

The deeper you want the folds to fall, the wider and longer the front panels have to be. Wide-topped pieces cannot be nested together on the cloth, so on 44 to 45 inch fabric the front of each leg often needs the full width to itself. That is where the extra metres go. As a guide, on 44 to 45 inch fabric:

  • Soft drape, folds ending around the upper thigh: about 2.5 m.
  • Medium drape, folds to mid-thigh: about 3 m.
  • Deep drape, folds falling to or past the knee: about 3.5 m.
  • Very deep cowl: up to about 4 m.

Fabric width and the right kind of cloth

Wide fabric helps more here than with most trousers, because the broad front panels finally fit across the width, often saving half a metre or more. Our fabric widths guide has the common widths.

The cloth itself matters as much as the amount. A drape needs a fabric that falls softly: crepe, georgette, viscose, soft silk or a fine lawn. Stiffer cloth such as khaddar or organza makes the folds stand away from the body, and very heavy fabric pulls the drape lower than planned. Our article on how fabric changes fit and drape explains why.

What to send with your order

Send your waist, hips and trouser length from waist to ankle, as in our trouser size guide. Add the round of your ankle and of your foot over the heel and instep, because a narrow cuff has to pass over your foot or needs an opening. Then describe the drape, for example “folds to mid-thigh”, and include a photo if you have one.

The trouser piece of an unstitched suit, often around 2.5 metres, is usually enough for a soft drape on standard width. You can send it through Stitching Only, or ask us to supply the fabric with a Fabric + Stitching quote. Either way, the quantity and the drape are confirmed in writing before anything is cut.

Common questions

Is a dhoti shalwar the same as a Patiala?

No. A Patiala shalwar has many vertical pleats gathered all round the waist that fall straight down. A dhoti shalwar gathers its extra fabric at the front into soft folds that drape across the legs.

Is a dhoti shalwar comfortable?

Most people find it very comfortable, because the seat is relaxed and the fabric moves with you. The cuff at the ankle is the only close part, so make sure your ankle and foot measurements are right.

Which kameez suits a dhoti shalwar?

A shorter kameez or kurti shows the drape, since a long kameez hides most of it. Straight and slightly A-line cuts in a plain or lightly printed fabric keep the attention on the folds.
