How to measure yourself for a shalwar kameez
A step-by-step guide to the eleven measurements a tailor needs for a made-to-measure shalwar kameez, with tips for accuracy and a printable diagram.
InspirationWhat you need
A soft tape measure, a mirror, and ideally a friend. Wear light, close-fitting clothes and stand naturally. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and measure twice: the second number is usually the honest one.
Write the measurements down in centimetres or inches, whichever you think in. Our quote form accepts both: just choose the unit you measured in, and use it for every measurement.
The eleven measurements
These match the numbers on our size guide diagram.
- Bust: around the fullest part, tape level under the arms and across the back.
- Waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips: the fullest part of the hips and seat, feet together.
- Shoulder: across the back from one shoulder edge to the other, where the seam sits.
- Armhole: around the top of the arm, under the armpit and over the shoulder point.
- Sleeve length: from the shoulder point to where you want the sleeve to end, arm relaxed.
- Kameez length: from the top of the shoulder beside the neck down to the hem you want.
- Front neck depth: from the base of the neck down to where the neckline should sit.
- Trouser length: from the natural waist down the side of the leg to the hem.
- Trouser bottom: around the ankle opening you want; measure a favourite pair.
- Wrist or cuff: around the wrist, with room to slip your hand through.
Three mistakes that spoil a fit
Measuring over bulky clothes. A jumper adds several centimetres at the bust and waist. Measure over a thin top.
Pulling the tape tight. A snug tape gives the tailor the true body measurement; ease for movement is added in the cutting, not the measuring.
Guessing the lengths. Kameez and sleeve lengths are personal. Measure a kameez you love and send those numbers if you prefer that length.
If you would rather not measure
Choose a standard UK size and we confirm the key numbers with you before cutting, or offer a kameez that already fits you well so we can take the measurements from it; we confirm how to send it to us in Pakistan before you post anything. Both options are on the stitching quote form, and we are always happy to talk you through measuring on WhatsApp.
Common questions
Should I measure in centimetres or inches?
Either. Use whichever you find easier and keep every measurement in the same unit. The quote form accepts both.
How much ease does a kameez need?
It depends on the fit you like and the fabric. Give us your true body measurements and tell us whether you prefer fitted, regular or relaxed; the ease is added when we cut.
