Maternity abaya: cuts and measurements for nine months

A maternity abaya needs extra front length, room at the bust and hips and an adjustable fit. The cuts that grow with you, and when and how to measure.

What makes an abaya work through pregnancy

A maternity abaya is an ordinary abaya with three changes: extra length at the front so the hem stays level as the bump grows, more room through the bust, waist and hips, and some way of adjusting the fit from month to month. Flared, wrap and gathered cuts do this more gracefully than a straight one.

Many loose abayas already in your wardrobe will see you through the early months. It is later that the front hem starts to lift and the buttons or snaps begin to pull, and that is when a cut planned for pregnancy earns its place.

The front hem problem

A bump takes up length. The cloth has further to travel at the front than at the back, so the front hem rises, a little at first and by several centimetres later on. On a floor-length abaya this shows clearly from the side: level at the back, ankle-high at the front.

The fix is cut in, not added afterwards. The front is made longer than the back, with the extra shaped in gradually so the hem hangs level over the bump. How much is needed depends on your build and on how far along you will be when you wear it most, so say so in your notes and, if you can, send a side-on photo in an abaya you own. A hem that sits a little above the floor is also kinder on stairs when you cannot see your feet as easily; our guide to abaya length with shoes explains how to give a clearance.

Cuts that grow with you

Leave narrow straight cuts, fixed waist seams and rows of buttons with no spare overlap for another time. These shapes cope far better:

  • A-line or flared from the shoulder: room increases steadily towards the hem with no waist seam to outgrow. See the A-line abaya guide.
  • Gathers or pleats under a yoke: fullness is released above the bust or just below it, so the front falls clear of the bump.
  • Wrap front: the overlap simply closes less deeply as you grow, and the ties sit above the bump. See wrap abayas.
  • Open front with inner ties: worn over a stretchy inner dress, it needs almost no adjustment.
  • Butterfly: generous everywhere, though the front hem still needs the extra length.

Adjustable details worth asking for

All of these are requests to make in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.

  • Ties at the back or sides: draw the abaya in above the bump now and loosen them later.
  • A separate belt: worn above the bump, and left off when it is not comfortable. See belted abayas.
  • Deeper front overlap: a few extra centimetres under the fastening so the front does not gape.
  • A concealed zip or opening at the chest: useful afterwards if you plan to nurse; our nursing-friendly abaya article takes over from there.
  • Soft, fluid cloth: fabric that drapes falls over the bump; stiff fabric stands out from it like a tent.

When and how to measure

Measure as close to ordering as you can, and tell us how many months along you are and when you expect to wear the abaya most. Take the bust and hips as usual, then add the fullest part of the bump, measured level around the body. Take two lengths: shoulder to floor down the back, and shoulder to floor over the bump at the front. The difference between them shows how much extra the front needs today.

Do not pad the numbers yourself. Send true measurements and write “please allow for the last three months”, so the allowance is agreed in writing instead of guessed twice. Our article on measuring for a pregnancy-friendly outfit covers the general method.

Timing matters because your shape will not wait. We make abayas to measure in 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, shipping time is separate, and we do not take rush orders, so start the quote early in the stage you are dressing for.

Common questions

Can I wear a maternity abaya after the baby arrives?

Usually yes, if it was cut with flare, gathers or a wrap instead of a fixed shape. The extra front length is the one thing that shows afterwards; with a hem set slightly above the floor it is rarely noticeable, and a belt takes up the spare width.

Do I need a maternity abaya in the first few months?

Often not. Most loose abayas have enough ease for the early months. The usual signs that it is time are a front hem that has started to lift and fastenings that pull across the middle.

Which fabric is comfortable for a pregnancy abaya?

Something light, soft and fluid that drapes over the bump and is easy to wash. If you feel the heat, ask for a breathable single layer and wear a thin cotton layer beneath. The fabric is confirmed in your written quote.
