Measuring for a pregnancy-friendly outfit

How to measure for a pregnancy-friendly kurta or shalwar kameez: when to measure, the extra bump and under-bust numbers, front length and building in room to adjust.

Measuring for a shape that is changing

To measure for a pregnancy-friendly outfit, take your measurements as close as you can to the day you send them, and add three numbers you would not usually need: under the bust, around the fullest part of the bump, and the front kameez length measured over the bump. Then choose a cut with room to adjust, because your shape will keep changing after the garment is made.

This is practical advice about clothes, not about pregnancy itself. If you have any question about your health or what is comfortable for you, your midwife or doctor is the person to ask. For cut and style ideas, see maternity kurtas and adjustable fits.

Timing: when to measure

Your outfit is cut to the measurements agreed in your written quote. Production takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, and shipping time is extra and varies by destination. We do not offer rush orders, so plan for the time it takes to arrive as well as the time you want to wear it.

If you want the outfit for a particular day, such as Eid or a family gathering a few months away, measure now but choose a style that allows for change. Because we make new garments rather than altering existing ones, the adjustability needs to be in the design from the start.

The measurements to add

Take the usual measurements from the size guide, then add these in the notes with a clear label:

  • Under-bust: directly beneath the bust, snug but not tight. It places an empire seam or gathers.
  • Bump: around the fullest part of the bump, tape level all the way round your back.
  • Front kameez length: from the shoulder point beside your neck, over the bust and the bump, down to the hem you want. Give the back length too; the difference keeps the hem level.
  • Trouser waist: where you want the waistband to sit, whether under the bump or over it, and say which.
  • Bust: measure it fresh, as it may well have changed since you last measured.

Cuts that leave room

Shapes that flare from above the bump give room without looking oversized. An A-line kameez or a kurta with a seam just under the bust lets the fabric fall freely over the tummy. Side ties, a softly gathered panel or an elasticated back section are details to ask about; we confirm in the quote what works with your fabric and design.

If you plan to wear the outfit afterwards as well, ask about openings that work for nursing; our article on nursing-friendly kurtas explains the options.

Trousers and fabrics

A soft elastic or drawstring waistband is the most adaptable choice, and a roomy shalwar or palazzo trousers are comfortable for long days. Fitted cigarette pants are harder to wear through a changing shape.

Breathable fabrics such as lawn and soft cottons are pleasant against the skin, especially in warm weather. If you are sending your own fabric, a larger front length and a fuller cut can need more of it, so we check the quantity before you post it.

Ordering

Start a quote, give your measurements with the extras in the notes, and explain how and when you plan to wear the outfit. If you would like help, the form lets you ask us to guide you through measuring. Customers in Saudi Arabia can read how ordering works on the Riyadh page, and the custom stitching page covers the service in full.

Common questions

When should I measure for a pregnancy-friendly outfit?

As close as possible to when you send your measurements, and choose a cut with room to adjust. The outfit is cut to the measurements agreed in your quote, and your shape will keep changing after that.

What extra measurements do I need?

Under the bust, around the fullest part of the bump, and the front kameez length measured over the bump as well as the back length. Also say where you want the trouser waistband to sit.

Can the outfit be ordered urgently?

No, rush orders are not offered. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is extra, so it is worth ordering early.
