Mud on shalwar and trouser hems: let it dry first

How to remove mud stains from clothes: why mud on a shalwar or trouser hem should dry and be brushed off first, then how to wash out the mark left on pale fabric.

Leave it alone until it is dry

Let the mud dry completely, brush off as much as you can, and only then treat the mark that is left with liquid detergent and cool water. It feels wrong to leave a muddy hem, but wiping or rinsing wet mud is what turns a splash into a stain.

Wet mud is fine particles of soil suspended in water. Rub it and you push those particles deep between the threads of the weave, where they cling. Once it has dried, most of it becomes a crust that cracks and falls away, taking the bulk of the stain with it. Until then, hang the trousers somewhere airy, away from your other clothes, and keep the muddy part from rubbing against anything.

Brushing off the dried mud

Do this outdoors or over a sink, as it is dusty work.

  • Flex the fabric gently between your hands so the crust cracks and drops off.
  • Brush with a soft clothes brush or a dry old toothbrush, working from the edge of the mark inwards.
  • Lift thick lumps with the back of a blunt knife rather than scraping hard.
  • Turn the hem inside out and brush from the back too, which pushes particles out the way they came in.
  • A vacuum cleaner nozzle held just above the fabric picks up the fine dust that brushing leaves.

Washing out what is left

Most of the time a faint brown or grey shadow remains. Check the care label, and test any product on an inside seam first.

  • Pre-treat: work a little liquid laundry detergent into the mark with your fingertips, from both sides, and leave it for about fifteen minutes.
  • Soak: for a stubborn mark, soak the hem in cool water with a little detergent for a while before washing.
  • Wash: at the temperature the label allows, inside out.
  • Check before drying: look at the hem in daylight while it is still wet. Heat from a dryer, a radiator or an iron can fix what is left, so if you can still see it, treat and wash again.
  • White cotton only: an oxygen-based stain remover can help a white shalwar if the label allows. Never use chlorine bleach on coloured fabric, silk or wool.

Silk, chiffon and embroidered hems

Let the mud dry and brush it very gently as above, but stop there. Wetting a silk or chiffon hem in patches can leave water marks, and rubbing can damage embroidery. Take it to a dry cleaner and tell them it is mud, so they choose the right treatment. For everyday cotton, removing common stains from lawn and cotton covers other marks you may meet on the same hem.

Rain splashes, and hems that stay cleaner

Grey speckles across the back of the calves are usually road spray rather than mud. They come out in a normal wash once dry, though pale trousers may need a pre-treatment first.

Length matters in wet weather. Trousers that end just above the ankle bone, such as cigarette pants, pick up far less than a wide shalwar or palazzo that brushes the pavement. If you live somewhere rainy, it can be worth ordering one everyday pair a little shorter. Our trouser size guide shows how length is measured, and you can choose the trouser style and length when you order custom stitching. Start your quote and mention what the trousers will be worn for.

Common questions

Should I use hot water on a mud stain?

Start with cool or lukewarm water. Soil contains organic matter and fine clay, and hot water early on can make the mark harder to shift. Once the stain has gone, the garment can be washed at the temperature on its label.

Can I put muddy trousers straight into the machine?

It is better to brush the dried mud off first. A machine full of loose soil spreads it over the whole load, and lumps of grit rub against the fabric during the wash.

Why is there still a brown ring after washing?

Some of the finest particles stayed in the weave. Do not dry the garment with heat yet; pre-treat the ring again with liquid detergent, leave it a little longer, and rewash.
