Neutral abayas in a few lines

A neutral abaya in beige, taupe or champagne is a light, soft alternative to black that goes with almost any scarf, bag or jewellery, looks calm in daylight and suits the office as easily as a wedding. The Gilded Seam makes every one of its 100 abaya designs to measure in Pakistan, in any neutral shade you name, in nida, crepe or chiffon.

The trick with neutrals is that each one hides a second colour underneath: yellow, pink, grey or green. That hidden tone decides whether the shade brightens your face or flattens it, which embroidery thread suits it and how it looks beside the rest of your clothes. This guide takes the main neutrals one by one, then the practical side of wearing a pale abaya.

Seven neutral shades and the tone under each

Shop listings use these names loosely, so judge by the undertone rather than the label. Our article on what counts as a neutral colour covers the idea in general, and beige, fawn, camel and skin separates four shades that are easily confused.

  • Beige: pale brown with a yellow base. The most familiar neutral abaya colour, warm and easy, and the one most people picture when they search for a nude abaya.
  • Sand: a little deeper and drier than beige, with a hint of grey or pink, like a beach in late afternoon. It hides light dust better than the paler shades.
  • Taupe: brown mixed with grey, sometimes with a faint violet cast. In daylight it reads cool and quiet; under warm indoor lights it turns softer and browner. Our Acacia designs are taupe.
  • Champagne: very pale gold, often with a pink or peach glow. It looks festive without any shine of its own and comes alive next to gold thread.
  • Mocha: milky coffee brown, the deepest of the light neutrals. A useful middle step if beige feels too pale and chocolate too dark.
  • Ivory: a warm off-white, softer than pure white and kinder to most complexions. Our Magnolia designs are ivory.
  • Pearl grey: pale grey with a soft, almost silvery cast. The coolest neutral here, and the one that sits most happily with silver jewellery. Our Pearl Geometry designs are pearl grey.

Choosing a neutral for your skin undertone

Because a neutral abaya is pale and the scarf frames your face, the shade sits right against your skin, and the match matters more than it does with black. If you already know your undertone, start there. If not, how to find your skin undertone has a few quick tests you can do at a window.

  • Warm undertones (golden or peachy skin, gold jewellery looks right): beige, sand, champagne and mocha share your warmth and tend to make skin look healthy.
  • Cool undertones (pink or rosy skin, silver flatters): taupe, pearl grey and an ivory with a pinkish rather than yellow base look cleaner on you than a yellow beige.
  • Neutral undertones: most of the list works, so choose by what else hangs in your wardrobe.

The nude shade trap

One mistake catches a lot of people. A nude shade almost identical to your own skin can make the abaya and your face merge into one flat tone, especially in photos taken indoors. Go a clear step lighter or darker than your skin, or let the scarf do the work: a scarf in a deeper or brighter colour near the face, as our guide to hijab colours near your face explains, rescues a neutral that feels slightly washed out.

Embroidery thread on a neutral base

Neutrals are forgiving with embroidery, because almost nothing clashes with them. The real decision is between a quiet, tonal finish and a pattern people can see from across the room.

  • Cream: the gentlest contrast. On taupe or mocha it shows clearly but softly, which is why the Acacia designs set cream acacia blossom on a taupe ground.
  • Gold: warm and dressy, at home on beige, champagne and ivory. On ivory it turns an everyday shape into something for an evening; the Magnolia designs mix gold with peach.
  • Grey: cool and modern. Grey leaves on taupe, as in Acacia, keep the look calm, and grey on beige gives a soft two-tone effect.
  • Silver: sharp on pearl grey and a cool ivory, less flattering on yellow beige, where it can look cold.
  • Tonal: thread one shade deeper than the fabric shows as texture rather than colour. It suits an office abaya that should look finished up close and plain from a distance.

Opacity, marks and care

Pale cloth lets more light through than dark cloth of the same weight. A beige or champagne abaya can show the outline of what you wear under it in strong sun or a camera flash, even when it looks solid in the mirror. Of our three abaya fabrics, crepe is usually the most opaque, nida comes next, and a single layer of chiffon is sheer in any light colour. Plan a full-length inner dress in a shade close to the abaya or close to your skin, never a dark or patterned one. An inner dress can be quoted together with the abaya, and you can ask about a lining in your enquiry. Our guides to white and pale abayas and abayas that turn see-through in sunlight or flash go through the tests to do before you wear one out.

A neutral hides pale dust far better than black does, but it shows darker marks: foundation at the neckline, grime on the hem, dye rubbed off new denim or a leather bag strap. Sand and mocha are the most forgiving; ivory and champagne show the most. Blot spills straight away instead of rubbing, wash light abayas apart from dark clothes, and keep them out of strong sun when drying and storing, since sunlight can yellow ivory and fade taupe unevenly across the shoulders. The full routine for each fabric is in how to wash an abaya.

Where a neutral abaya fits in

Neutrals cover more of life than most colours. A taupe or sand abaya in nida makes an easy work abaya that looks professional without the severity of black. Beige and pearl grey reflect more of the sun than dark shades, which counts on summer days outdoors in the Gulf. Champagne with gold embroidery suits Eid and evening dinners, and ivory or champagne is a natural starting point for a bridal abaya, with heavier embroidery, beadwork or sequins agreed in the quote.

As a wedding guest, a neutral is a calm choice, though some families prefer guests to leave ivory and white to the bride, so ask if you are unsure. If you like pale colours but want a little more colour in them, our guide to pastel abayas carries on from here.

The neutral designs in our collection

Four of the ten embroidery motifs in our abaya collection are already drawn on a neutral ground, listed below; the images on each design page are design previews, not photographs of finished pieces. Every design, in any of the ten shapes, can also be made in beige, sand, champagne, mocha or another neutral you describe. Name the shade in your enquiry and, if you can, attach a photo of something in that colour taken by a window. Each design comes with a matching scarf, and prices start from £80.

  • Acacia, in taupe: cream acacia blossom and grey leaves. The Acacia kimono abaya runs the embroidery down both front edges; the Acacia tulip abaya gathers it in a spray over one shoulder.
  • Pearl Geometry, in pearl grey: a fine cream diamond lattice. The Pearl Geometry butterfly abaya keeps it to the neckline and sleeves.
  • Magnolia, in ivory: peach and gold magnolias. The Magnolia bell abaya has flared sleeves and an A-line cut.
  • Palm Arc, in chocolate brown: gold and bronze palm fronds, for a neutral with more depth, such as the Palm Arc bisht abaya.

Common questions

Is a beige abaya see-through?

It can be, depending on the fabric. Crepe in beige is usually opaque, nida may show an outline in strong light, and a single layer of chiffon is sheer. A full-length inner dress close to the abaya’s shade or your skin tone solves it, and one can be quoted with the abaya.

What is the difference between taupe and beige?

Beige is a pale brown with a yellow base, so it looks warm. Taupe mixes brown with grey, so it looks cooler and quieter in daylight and softens towards brown under warm indoor light.

Can I order a champagne abaya with gold embroidery?

Yes. Any of our abaya designs can be made in champagne, and the abaya colour and the thread colours are agreed in your written quote before anything is cut.
