Custom abaya on a budget: where to spend and where to save

An affordable custom abaya comes down to choices: spend on measurements, length, fabric and shape; save on embroidery, colours and quantity; skip false economies.

The short version

To keep a custom abaya affordable, put your care into the things that decide whether you wear it, and save on the things that only decorate it. Spend on accurate measurements, the exact length with your shoes, an opaque fabric and a shape you will reach for every week; save on embroidery coverage, extra colours and the number of abayas you order at once. At The Gilded Seam those choices usually lead to a design in the essential tier, at £80 with a matching scarf.

Our article on how much a custom abaya costs lists all three tiers and what the written quote adds. This one is about the decisions that keep an abaya in the lowest tier and get the most wear out of it.

These are launch prices until 31 October. From 1 November the same three tiers cost £99, £125 and £150.

What the essential tier gets you

The essential tier covers the tailored, butterfly and bell shapes with our lighter embroidery motifs. They are the shapes we suggest for a first abaya or one for every day. The tailored cut is long and straight with a narrow shawl collar and looks sharp over workwear. The butterfly is cut wide, with the sleeves and body in one, and pulls on over the head. The bell is one of the more fitted shapes, with a gentle A-line and sleeves that flare at the wrist.

Two examples show what that looks like. The Olive Branch tailored abaya is olive green, with soft gold olive branches along the shawl collar and around the cuffs. The Pearl Geometry bell abaya is pearl grey, with a fine cream diamond lattice down the neck opening and on the flared sleeves, almost tone on tone. Both come with a matching scarf.

Choosing the essential tier does not mean giving up the choices that matter. Nida, crepe or chiffon, hand, machine or mixed embroidery, and a standard size or your own measurements all cost the same across the collection. If your heart is set on a fuller motif, the Iris tailored abaya and the Acacia butterfly abaya use the same shapes with fuller embroidery and sit one step up, in the signature tier at £99.

Where to spend

On a collection design, three of these four cost nothing extra. What they cost is attention, and they decide whether the abaya leaves the wardrobe.

  • Accurate measurements. Take them with a soft tape, ideally with someone helping, and label each number as body or garment. An abaya that sits properly across the back gets worn; one that pulls when you reach forward stays on the hanger. Our measuring help page explains how to get guidance if you are unsure.
  • The exact length with your shoes. Measure from the shoulder to the floor in the shoes you wear most, and write down which shoes they were. The guide to abaya length with your shoes covers hem clearance and switching between heels and flats.
  • An opaque fabric. Nida and crepe in mid and dark shades are the safe choice for daily wear. Chiffon is light and slightly sheer, which suits evenings over another layer but limits what you can wear underneath on an ordinary day. See whether an abaya shows through in sunlight or flash.
  • A shape you will wear every week. This is the one choice that changes the tier, so it deserves the most thought. If you are torn, which abaya to order first makes the case for starting simple.

Where to save

Saving here does not mean settling. It means putting the money where you see it every day and leaving out what you would notice once.

  • Embroidery coverage. Embroidery at the cuffs and front edges, or along a collar, gives an abaya a finished look without covering it. On our collection, that is what the essential designs already do. On a design from your own photo, the amount of embroidery is one of the things that moves the quote, so asking for cuffs and front edges rather than all-over work keeps it lower.
  • One colour that works with most of your wardrobe. A single abaya in black, navy, olive, taupe or grey goes with nearly every scarf, bag and pair of shoes you own, so one abaya covers more of your week. Any of our designs can be made in another colour, agreed in your quote, and black or coloured abayas weighs up the choice.
  • Starting with one abaya. One piece is enough for an order. Wear it for a few weeks, write down anything you would change, and the second order starts from numbers you have tested. How many abayas you need helps with the longer plan.
  • Not on the embroidery method or the size. Switching from hand to machine embroidery, or from your own measurements to a standard size, saves nothing on a collection design, because they are the same price. Choose them for the look and the comfort.

What makes an affordable abaya look expensive

Most of what reads as expensive in an abaya is fit and finish rather than the amount of decoration. These details cost little or nothing and change how the whole outfit looks.

  • Length. A hem that clears the floor by the same small gap all the way round looks deliberate. One that drags, or stops at the ankle bone, looks borrowed.
  • Pressing. Crisp front edges and a collar that lies flat make a plain abaya look sharp. Use steam or a cool iron on these fabrics; pressing and storing abayas has the method.
  • Tonal embroidery. Thread close to the cloth colour, like soft gold on olive or cream on pearl grey, looks quiet and considered. Strong contrast all over is harder to wear every day.
  • The matching scarf. A scarf in the same colour makes the outfit read as one piece. It comes with every collection design, and abayas with a matching scarf shows ways to wear it.
  • Clean workmanship. Straight seams, neat insides and a level hem matter more than any embellishment. How to tell a well-made abaya shows what to look at when yours arrives.

False economies

Some savings cost more in the end, usually because the abaya is worn less, or not at all.

  • Sheer chiffon with no inner layer. Chiffon looks lovely, but without a lining or an inner dress you can only wear it over certain clothes. Either choose nida or crepe, or ask about a lining in your quote.
  • Guessing your measurements. We correct or remake an abaya that does not match the measurements agreed in writing, but if it matches numbers that were guessed, there is nothing to correct. Every piece is made to order, so there are no change-of-mind returns either. Ten minutes with a tape costs nothing and protects the whole order.
  • A hem left long to be safe. A few extra centimetres feels cautious, but a hem that catches under your heel gets dirty, frays and trips you on stairs. Measure in your shoes and trust the number.
  • Three abayas before the first is tested. If a sleeve is a little short on the first, it is short on all three.

Ordering an essential abaya

Choose an essential design, pick your fabric, embroidery method and size on its page, and send the order with your country and city. For the Olive Branch tailored abaya, you can start the order here. Your written quote adds delivery and any import charges, so its total is the whole cost. You pay in full in advance, by bank transfer, Wise or a card payment link, and making takes 5 to 7 working days from then, with shipping time on top.

If you live in Britain, the page on custom abayas for UK customers covers pounds and delivery, and the custom abaya page shows the whole collection. If you are weighing our abayas against shop-bought ones, custom vs ready-made abaya puts the two side by side.

Common questions

Which of your abayas costs least?

The essential tier, at £80: the tailored, butterfly and bell shapes with lighter embroidery, each with a matching scarf. Delivery and any import charges are added in your written quote.

Can I save by choosing machine embroidery or a standard size?

Not on a collection design. Hand, machine and mixed embroidery cost the same, and so do sizes S to XL and made to measure, so choose them for the look and the comfort.

Is one abaya fabric less expensive than the others?

On our collection designs, no. Nida, crepe and chiffon are the same price, so choose by how you will wear the abaya: nida or crepe for opaque everyday wear, chiffon for a lighter look over another layer.
