Trousers tight at the thighs: what to ask for

Trousers tight on the thighs are usually sized by waist and hip, with the leg left to chance. Why sitting makes it worse, and the thigh numbers to send.

Sized for your hips, not your legs

Trousers are tight at the thighs when they are chosen by waist and hip and your thighs need more room than that size allows. Sitting makes it worse, because the thigh flattens and spreads against the chair. Giving your thigh measurement, taken at the fullest point, lets the leg be cut with room of its own instead of room borrowed from the hip.

The tell-tale signs are short horizontal lines pulling across the front of the thighs, pockets that flare open, and side seams that twist towards the front when you walk.

Why the hip size does not cover the thigh

A trouser pattern is drawn from a set of body proportions. The hip measurement decides the width at the top of the leg, and the thigh is assumed from it. Fuller or more muscular thighs, which have nothing to do with hip size, simply do not fit that assumption.

Narrow styles feel it first. A cigarette pant tapers from the hip almost straight away, so the thigh is the first place it runs short of room. A straight leg drops more vertically, which helps, but only if the top of the leg is wide enough to begin with.

Sitting changes the numbers

Measure your thigh standing, then sit on a hard chair and measure it again at the same place. Most people find it is a few centimetres more seated, because the muscle spreads under its own weight. Trousers cut with no room beyond the standing measurement will grip as soon as you sit, which is why a pair can feel fine in a changing room and uncomfortable at a desk.

For that reason the cut needs some ease over your thigh measurement, more for firm fabrics than for soft ones. You do not need to work out the amount yourself. Send both numbers and say how you will wear the trousers, such as at a desk all day, and it is agreed in your quote.

What to send

Our trouser size guide lists the thigh as an optional measurement for fitted styles. For this problem, treat it as essential, and add the seated version too.

If you have trousers that are comfortable at the thigh, measure them flat across the leg just below the crotch and double the figure; our guide to body and garment measurements explains the difference between that and a body number. Our trouser fit guide covers the rise and length in the same order.

Add these to the notes when you ask for a quote, and choose Fabric + Stitching or send your own fabric.

  • Thigh, standing: around the fullest part of one thigh, usually just below the crotch, tape level, muscles relaxed.
  • Thigh, seated: the same place, sitting upright.
  • Mid-thigh: halfway between the crotch and the knee, for slim styles.
  • Knee and trouser bottom, if you want a tapered leg, so the taper starts below the fullest part.
  • A note: “trousers that fit my hips are always tight on my thighs”.

Common questions

Will more room at the thigh make the leg look wide?

Not if the rest of the leg is cut to your knee and ankle. The extra room sits where your thigh is, and the leg can still narrow below it to a slim or straight finish.

Is the thigh measured at the top or in the middle?

At the fullest part, which for most people is just below the crotch. A second measurement halfway to the knee helps for slim or cigarette styles.

Does every fabric need the same thigh room?

No. A soft fabric with some give needs less extra room than a firm, crisp weave, which cannot stretch at all when you sit. The fabric is agreed in your quote, so the ease can be set to suit it.
