Two-tone abaya: where to place the second colour
Where to put the second colour on a two-tone abaya: front bands, cuffs, side panels, facings or hem, which pairings stay calm, and the colour-run test to do first.
InspirationThe short answer
Put the second colour where you want the eye to travel. Front bands draw a long vertical line, cuffs frame the hands, side panels slim the outline, an inner facing shows only when the abaya opens, and a hem band adds weight at the bottom. Keep the contrast to one or two areas and the abaya looks planned rather than busy.
Before the two fabrics are sewn together, check that neither one bleeds. A dark colour that runs into a pale one in the first wash ruins a two-tone abaya, and it cannot be undone.
Five places for the contrast
Each placement changes the outline in a different way. Think about how you wear the abaya day to day: open or closed, with the sleeves pushed up or down, and whether you carry a bag across the body that would hide a panel.
- Front bands: a strip of the second colour down both front edges, often running round the back neck. It works on open and closed styles and makes the figure look longer.
- Cuffs: the most modest choice. A deep cuff in a lighter shade lifts a black abaya without changing its shape, and it is the part people notice when you move your hands.
- Side panels: a narrower panel at each side seam, running from underarm to hem. In a darker shade than the centre, it has a slimming effect; in a lighter one it widens.
- Inner facing: the second colour sits on the inside of the front edges and appears only when the abaya moves or falls open. It is the quietest way to wear two colours.
- Hem band: a border along the bottom. It anchors the abaya visually but draws attention to the hem, so it suits the floor-length styles more than the ankle-length ones.
Pairings that stay calm
The safest two-tone abayas pair colours that sit close together: black with charcoal, navy with slate, camel with cream, olive with khaki, or two shades of the same dusty rose. The contrast is noticeable in daylight but never loud. Black with a warm neutral such as stone or taupe is a step bolder and still easy to wear with most scarves.
Strong pairs such as black and white or navy and red make a statement and show every crease and mark on the pale side. If you want one, keep the brighter colour to a narrow area such as the cuffs or a thin band. Our guide to black or coloured abayas helps if you are still deciding on the main colour.
Match the texture as well as the colour. Two fabrics of a similar weight and sheen hang together; a shiny satin band on a matte crepe body reads as a deliberate trim, while a heavy band on a light fabric can drag the hem down.
The colour-run test before washing
Dampen a hidden corner of each fabric, press it between folds of white cloth or kitchen paper with a warm iron, and look for any colour on the white. Do the same with a few drops of warm water left on the fabric for a few minutes. Our step-by-step colour-fastness test explains the method in full.
If the dark fabric marks the white, it should be washed on its own a few times before it is sewn to a lighter one, or the pairing should change. Once the abaya is made, wash it cold, inside out, and never leave it damp in a heap. Our article on how to wash an abaya covers the rest. Always follow the fabric label.
Ordering a two-tone abaya
We make abayas to measure, in fabric we supply or in yours. For a two-tone design, say where the second colour goes and roughly how wide each band or panel should be, and attach a photo or sketch if you have one. If you are sending your own fabrics through Stitching Only, we confirm the quantity of each colour before you post anything.
Start with Send Your Design, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.
Common questions
Is a two-tone abaya more work to make than a plain one?
Usually a little, because each panel or band is cut and joined separately and the seams need to line up. The difference depends on how many contrast pieces there are, and the written quote reflects the design you choose.
Can the contrast be a print rather than a second plain colour?
Yes, a printed fabric can be used for cuffs, bands or a facing. Keep the print small or the colours close to the main fabric so it looks deliberate, and check that both fabrics need the same care.
Which part of a two-tone abaya fades first?
Usually the cuffs and front edges, because they are handled and rubbed most. Choosing a deeper shade for those areas and washing inside out helps both colours age at the same rate.
