Gol Daman: Curved Hem Designs for Kameez and Kurtis
Also called gol daman
Quick answer
A gol daman is a curved hem: the corners at the side slits are rounded off, or the whole hem curves up at the sides like a shirt tail. It looks softer and more relaxed than a straight hem and suits short kurtis and everyday kameez. It’s usually finished with a facing or piping so the curve hangs smoothly.
What it is
A gol daman replaces the square corners of a straight hem with curves. There are two common versions: a straight hem with only the corners at the slits rounded off, or a hem that curves up towards the side seams, so the centre front and back are the longest points. Either can be subtle or pronounced. A high-low hem, shorter at the front than the back, is a close relative and is often curved too.
Who and what it suits
- Short kurtis and thigh-length kameez: modern over cigarette pants, straight trousers or jeans.
- Everyday and campus wear: relaxed and easy, without looking unfinished.
- Plain and small-print fabrics: the curve itself becomes the detail.
- Borders, with care: rounded corners at the slits usually work with a border; a deep shirt-tail curve generally doesn’t, because the border is made to run straight.
Fabrics and finishing
A curve can’t be turned up as neatly as a straight edge, so a gol daman is usually finished with a shaped facing, or bound with bias binding or piping. This helps the curve hang smoothly instead of rippling after washing.
Lawn, cotton and cambric take a curve easily. Soft chiffon and georgette suit a gentle curve with a narrow finish. Contrast piping in a colour from the print outlines the shape neatly, and narrow, flexible lace can follow a gentle curve; wide lace tends to ripple on a tight one.
Measurements that matter
Kameez length is measured from the highest point of the shoulder beside the neck to the longest point of the hem, usually the centre front. For a shirt-tail curve, say how much shorter you want the sides, or send a photo of a kameez whose curve you like. Slit height is measured up from the hem at the side seam; because a deep curve already lifts the sides, the slits can often be shorter. Inches or centimetres are both fine.
How to ask for it
On the stitching quote form, choose your kameez length and write “gol daman” in the design notes, saying whether you want rounded corners only or a full curve, plus the slit height and finish. A photo of the curve you like is the clearest brief. If you have a border, include a photo and we’ll tell you before cutting whether it will follow the curve.
Common questions
What is the difference between a gol daman and a straight daman?
A straight daman runs level with square corners at the slits. A gol daman rounds off those corners or curves the whole hem, which looks softer and more casual.
Can a gol daman have a border?
A slight rounding at the slits usually works. A deep curve generally cuts through a border, so if the border is the main feature, a straight hem shows it best.
