Straight Daman (Hem) for Kameez: The Best Hem for Borders
Also called straight daman
Quick answer
A straight daman is a level hem that runs evenly round the kameez, usually with side slits. It’s the classic hem and the best partner for a printed or embroidered border, because the border is made to run in a straight line. Tell us the length and slit height, and whether you have a border to use.
What it is
A straight daman sits at the same length at the front, back and sides, and meets the side slits in neat square corners. It’s the default hem on most shalwar kameez and the simplest to wear. On a straight kameez it looks clean and tailored; on an A-line kameez the hem is wider but still level.
Who and what it suits
- Printed and embroidered borders: the border follows the hem without being cut or pieced.
- Bold prints: a plain straight hem lets the print lead.
- Everyday, work and campus: tidy under a coat or cardigan, and quick to iron.
- More coverage: with lower slits, it’s the simplest modest combination.
- Any length: from a hip-length kurti to a calf-length kameez.
Borders and finishing
Many unstitched suits include a daman border, and the key question is whether it’s long enough for the hem you want. A straight kameez has a narrower hem than an A-line or flared one, so the same border might go all the way round one and only across the front of another. If it’s short, it can run across the front only, across the front and sides, or be joined with a matching band at the back.
Without a border, a straight hem is usually turned up and stitched. A line of contrast piping or a narrow lace edge lifts plain fabric, and an organza band makes it dressier. On sheer chiffon and georgette, a narrow hem keeps the edge light.
Measurements that matter
Kameez length decides where the hem falls, measured from the highest point of the shoulder beside the neck; the length guide helps you choose. The hem width (ghera), all the way round the bottom edge, decides how much border you need: lay a kameez you like flat, measure across the hem and double it. The border stays at the hem whatever length you choose, because the length is taken from the top of the pieces, as long as the front and back are long enough.
How to ask for it
On the stitching quote form, choose your kameez length and write “straight hem” in the design notes, with the slit height and any finish. If your suit has a border, photograph it next to the front panel and say whether it should go all the way round. We’ll check from the photos whether it’s long enough before anything is cut.
Common questions
Why is a straight hem best for a border?
A printed or embroidered border is made to run in a straight line, so it follows a straight hem without being cut or pieced. Curves, scallops and points usually cut through the pattern.
What if my border won’t go all the way round?
It can run across the front only, across the front and sides, or be joined with a matching band at the back. Send a photo and we’ll suggest the neatest option for your hem width.
