Three-Quarter Sleeves: The Everyday Kameez Sleeve

Quick answer

Three-quarter sleeves end about halfway between the elbow and the wrist. They’re the most popular everyday length because they cover the arm but stay out of the way when you cook, wash your hands or work at a desk. Tell us where you want the sleeve to end, or send the length from a kameez you like.

What it is

A three-quarter sleeve stops on the forearm, a little above the wrist. Exactly where it ends is a personal choice: a little lower looks almost full, a little higher feels closer to an elbow sleeve. It’s most often straight or slightly tapered, but it can also take a small slit or overlapping petal at the hem, a cuff, a lace band or a gentle flare.

Who and what it suits

  • Everyday, work and campus: covered enough for most settings and practical all day. It pairs well with a band collar or a round neck with a slit.
  • Wudu and housework: it pushes up above the elbow easily, especially with a little room at the hem.
  • Bangles and watches: the wrist stays free, so jewellery shows.
  • Petite wearers: like a V or slit neckline, a three-quarter sleeve adds length to the upper body.
  • Embroidered sleeve borders: a border at the hem of a three-quarter sleeve sits where it’s easily seen.

Fabrics and finishing

Three-quarter sleeves suit every season. In lawn they’re cool enough for summer; in cambric, linen and khaddar they work through autumn and winter under a shawl or cardigan. A straight or slightly tapered shape slides easily into a coat sleeve if you layer. Chiffon sleeves at this length are often left sheer; say if you’d like them lined, or lined only to the elbow.

Popular finishes are a plain turned hem, contrast piping, a strip of lace or the embroidered border from your suit. Because the sleeve is shorter than a full one, it also saves a little fabric when the sleeve piece is tight.

Measurements that matter

Sleeve length is measured from the shoulder point to where you want the hem, with your arm relaxed. The width at the hem matters more than it seems: too narrow and the sleeve won’t push up; too wide and it looks loose. For a fitted look, send your upper arm, the armhole and a wrist / cuff measurement taken around the forearm where the sleeve will end. Measuring a kameez whose sleeves you like gives you the length and the hem width at once.

How to ask for it

Choose “Three-quarter” under sleeves on the stitching quote form and write the sleeve length in the notes, in inches or centimetres. Mention any slit, cuff, lace or border you want at the hem, and add a photo if you have one.

Common questions

What is the difference between three-quarter and elbow sleeves?

An elbow sleeve ends at or just above the elbow; a three-quarter sleeve continues down the forearm and ends partway to the wrist. Three-quarter gives more coverage while still leaving the wrist free.

Can three-quarter sleeves have an embroidered border?

Yes. The border sits at the hem and the sleeve is cut to your length from the top, provided the sleeve piece is long enough, which we check from your photos before cutting.
