Round Neck With Slit: The Everyday Kurta Neckline
Also called chaak wala gala
Quick answer
A round neck with a slit adds a short opening at the centre front of a round neckline. It lengthens the neck without going deep, makes the kurta easier to put on, and is one of the most common everyday kurta necklines. Tell us the neck depth and how long you want the slit.
What it is
The neckline is a round curve, usually fairly high, with a vertical slit running down from its lowest point. The slit can be left open, edged in piping or lace, or closed with a small button and loop. It’s sometimes called a notched or split neck.
Who and what it suits
- Everyday kurtas and lawn suits: practical, relaxed and easy to wear with or without a dupatta.
- Round faces and short necks: the vertical slit adds length where a plain round neck would not.
- Fabrics without stretch: the opening makes a higher neckline easy to pull over the head.
Slit length and finishing
The slit length is a personal choice. A short slit is subtle and modest; a longer one looks more casual and open. Give us the length you’d like in inches or centimetres, measured down from the neckline, or choose “advise me”.
The slit edges need a clean finish so they lie flat after washing. The usual choices are a narrow facing, piping, a thin lace edge, or a small placket with a button. In soft lawn, a facing or piping helps the slit keep its shape.
How to ask for it
Choose “Round” as the neckline on the stitching quote form and write “with a front slit” in the notes, with the neck depth, the slit length and the finish you want. A photo of a kurta you like makes it exact.
Common questions
How long should the slit be?
It depends on how open you like it. Measure the slit on a kurta you like, or tell us you want it modest and we’ll suggest a length in your design approval.
Can the slit close with a button?
Yes. A small button and loop or a hook is a common finish, especially if you want the option to wear it closed.
