Abayas for hospital shifts and clinical placements

Useful abaya features for hospital work and clinical placements: sleeves that roll or unfasten above the elbow, hems off the floor and fabric for constant washing.

Start with your employer’s dress policy

Every hospital, clinic and university placement sets its own dress code, and many have rules on sleeve length, loose clothing and hand hygiene in clinical areas. Some require uniforms or scrubs on the ward, while others allow your own clothes with conditions. Read your policy, ask your ward manager or placement lead what is accepted, and design around their answer.

Where your own abaya is allowed, look for sleeves that roll or unfasten above the elbow, a hem that clears the floor, a plain front with no dangling ties, and a fabric that survives frequent hot washing. The rest of this article explains each one.

Sleeves that move out of the way

Many clinical settings ask staff to keep forearms clear during patient care, so a sleeve that converts quickly is the most useful feature. These are the common ways to make one; ask for whichever suits your policy.

  • Button tab: the sleeve rolls up above the elbow and a fabric tab buttons over it, as on a shirt.
  • Opening cuff: a cuff with a placket that opens fully, so the sleeve pushes up easily without straining the fabric.
  • Elbow sleeve with separate covers: a shorter abaya sleeve with removable forearm covers for the walk to and from work.
  • Fitted sleeve: a narrower sleeve rolls far more neatly than a wide or bell sleeve, which bunches and falls down.

Hems, fronts and pockets

Ward floors are long, busy and not always dry. Keep the hem at the ankle or slightly above, measured in your work shoes, so it never sweeps the floor or catches on bed wheels and trolleys. Our guide to abaya sleeve length and cuffs and the length guidance in how to measure for an abaya help you get both right.

A closed front is simpler than an open one around patients and equipment. Leave off belts, long ties, embellishment and loose trims, which can catch or trail. Side-seam pockets are useful for a pen and a phone, and our guide on abaya pockets covers their size and position.

Fabric for frequent washing

Clinical clothes go through the wash after every shift, often at higher temperatures than everyday clothing. Choose a fabric whose label allows that: polycotton and sturdy cotton blends usually cope well, while delicate crepes, chiffon and anything that needs dry cleaning do not. Navy, grey and other mid to dark shades hide wear between washes.

Follow your employer’s guidance on washing work clothes, then the fabric label. Our article on how to wash an abaya covers general care, and a crease-resistant fabric saves ironing after long shifts.

Ordering a work abaya

We make abayas to measure as Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only. Tell us in the quote form what your dress policy requires and which sleeve option you want, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. We cannot advise on any employer’s rules, so please check those before ordering.

Common questions

Can I wear an abaya over scrubs?

Some staff wear an abaya over scrubs for the journey and take it off on arrival. Whether you can keep it on in clinical areas is a question for your employer, not something any tailor can answer.

Which closure works best on a work abaya?

A zip or a row of snaps is quick and lies flat. Buttons are fine too, but avoid large decorative ones that catch on equipment or need care in a hot wash.

Is a shorter abaya more practical for clinical work?

Many people find an ankle or just above ankle length easiest on busy wards. It keeps the hem away from wet floors and wheels while still giving full coverage.
