Abaya vs maxi dress: can one replace the other?
Abaya vs maxi dress: how the two differ in ease, sleeves, opacity, length and how they are worn, and what to change if you want a maxi dress to do an abaya’s job.
InspirationThe main difference
An abaya is an outer layer, worn loose over your clothes, with full sleeves and an opaque fabric. A maxi dress is the outfit itself: a long dress worn on its own, usually closer to the body. A maxi dress can do an abaya’s job only if it is roomy, opaque, long and full-sleeved enough, and most ready-made maxi dresses are not all four.
Neither is better. They suit different moments, and knowing what separates them tells you what to ask for if you want one garment that covers both.
Side by side
These are the features that matter most when you are choosing between the two, or trying to make one behave like the other.
- How it is worn: an abaya goes over other clothes and comes off indoors; a maxi dress is what you wear all day.
- Ease: an abaya is cut with generous room through the bust, waist and hip so it skims rather than follows the body. Most maxi dresses are shaped at the bust or waist.
- Sleeves: an abaya has full-length sleeves as standard; maxi dresses come sleeveless, short, three-quarter or long.
- Opacity: abaya fabrics are chosen to be opaque on their own; many maxi dresses are light enough to need a slip in daylight.
- Length: an abaya usually reaches the ankle or floor; a maxi dress may stop at the lower calf.
- Opening: abayas often open fully at the front or close with snaps or a zip; maxi dresses usually pull on or close at the back.
Turning a maxi dress into an abaya-style dress
If you would rather wear one long dress than a dress plus an abaya, these are the changes to ask for. Together they move a maxi dress most of the way towards an abaya’s function while it still works as a dress on its own.
Start with ease. Ask for more room across the bust, waist and hip than a fitted dress would have; our guide to abaya shoulder and bust ease explains typical amounts. Then choose full-length sleeves, a fabric that is opaque in daylight or a lining, a length to the ankle with your shoes on, and a high round or band neckline. Our article on modest maxi dresses made to measure covers each of those choices in more detail.
When each one is the better choice
An abaya is the easier answer when you want to wear different outfits underneath, need to cover quickly over home clothes, or want something you can take off indoors. It is also simpler when your weight or shape changes, because a loose outer layer forgives more.
A maxi dress suits warm days when one layer is all you want, holidays and gatherings where the dress is the outfit, and anyone who prefers a defined waist. Our tiered maxi dress, shown on the design page, is one example of a dress made to be worn on its own.
Ordering either one
We make both abayas and maxi dresses to measure. If you want a single garment between the two, describe how you plan to wear it and send a photo through Send Your Design. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.
Common questions
Can I wear a maxi dress under an abaya?
Yes, it is a common pairing. A slim maxi dress in a breathable fabric sits neatly under an abaya, and you can take the abaya off indoors and still be fully dressed.
Is a kaftan closer to an abaya or to a maxi dress?
It sits between them. A kaftan is loose like an abaya but is usually worn as the outfit itself, often with wide sleeves cut in one with the body.
Does a maxi dress need a lining to replace an abaya?
Only if the fabric is see-through in daylight. Hold it up to a window or test it in sunlight, and if you can see shapes through it, ask for a lining or choose a denser fabric.
