How loose should an abaya be? Shoulder and bust ease
How much ease an abaya needs at the shoulder, bust and hips, why it differs from a dress, and how to describe the drape you want so it is not tight or tent-like.
InspirationEase in one paragraph
An abaya should be loose enough to skim over your clothes and let you sit, kneel, drive and lift your arms without pulling, while the shoulders still sit where your own shoulders are. That extra room beyond your body measurement is called ease. Body measurements tell us your size; your ease preference tells us how the abaya should feel. Send both and the result is far more likely to match what you imagine.
Ease is the part of a made-to-measure abaya that people most often forget to mention, because ready-made abayas decide it for you. Here is how to think about it and how to describe it.
Why an abaya needs more room than a dress
A fitted dress sits close over bare skin. An abaya is an outer layer, worn over a dress, a kameez or trousers and a top, and sometimes over a cardigan in winter. It has to clear all of that and still drape. It is also worn for long stretches: commuting, praying, sitting at work. Tightness across the back or bust that you would tolerate for an evening becomes tiring over a full day.
Our general article on how loose a kameez should be explains ease for closer garments. For abayas, the same principle applies with more generous amounts.
Shoulders: the anchor point
Even a flowing abaya hangs from the shoulders, so this is where accuracy matters most. If the shoulder seam sits too far in, the abaya pulls across the back when you reach forward. Too far out, and it slides and looks borrowed. Measure across the back from one shoulder point to the other, and tell us if your shoulders slope noticeably or if one sits lower.
Styles cut in one piece with the sleeve, such as kimono or very wide shapes, rely less on the shoulder seam. They still need your shoulder width to set the neckline and the overall drape, so always include it.
Bust and hips: where tightness shows
Pulling at the bust or across the hips is the most common complaint with ready-made abayas. A few practical points:
- Bust: a closed abaya needs enough room at the bust for the front to hang straight without gaping between fastenings. If you have a fuller bust, say so; it affects the front length too.
- Hips: measure the fullest part, then sit down and check how much the tape wants to move. A straight abaya needs room for sitting, not only standing.
- Back: if you often feel abayas tighten across the shoulder blades when you drive or carry children, ask for extra room across the back.
- Open-front styles: they are more forgiving at the bust, but the fronts should still meet or overlap when you want them to.
How to describe the drape you want
Words like “loose” mean different things to different people, so give us something measurable. The easiest method is to lay an abaya you like flat, measure across the chest from armpit to armpit and double it, then compare that with your bust measurement. The difference is the ease you are used to. Our guide to measuring an abaya you already own walks through it, and our page on body and garment measurements explains the difference.
If you have no abaya to measure, describe it in plain terms: “relaxed but not oversized, I wear a jumper underneath in winter”, or “flowing, I like plenty of movement”. Add a photo of a style you like. You can also choose “advise me”, and we suggest an amount based on your design and fabric.
Fabric changes how ease feels
A soft, drapey fabric falls close to the body even with plenty of ease, while a crisper fabric stands away from it and can look bigger. If you are sending your own fabric for Stitching Only, tell us how it behaves when you hold it up. Our fabric choice guide explains why weight and drape matter.
When you are ready, add your measurements and your ease notes on the quote form. Everything is agreed with you in writing before cutting, and we make your abaya in 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment.
Common questions
Should an abaya be tight at the bust?
No. An abaya should hang freely over the bust with enough room for the clothes underneath. If ready-made abayas pull or gape there, mention it in your notes so the bust and front length can be planned for it.
How do I tell you how loose I want it?
Measure an abaya you like flat across the chest and hips, double the numbers and send them with your body measurements. If you have none, describe the drape you want and include a photo.
Does the fabric affect how loose it looks?
Yes. Soft, fluid fabrics hang closer to the body, while crisp fabrics stand away and look fuller, even with the same measurements.
