Bike chain grease on a shalwar or dupatta: how to shift it
How to remove bike chain grease from clothes: lift the black solids, break the grease down with washing-up liquid, and what is realistic on chiffon, lawn and cotton.
InspirationWhy chain grease is different
To remove bike chain grease from clothes, scrape off the surface grease, then work washing-up liquid or a heavy-duty liquid detergent into the mark from the back, rinse, and wash at the warmest temperature the label allows. Check the mark before drying and repeat if a shadow remains. It takes more patience than a cooking oil spot, because it is not just oil.
Chain and motor grease is thick lubricant mixed with fine metal particles, road dirt and soot. The oil can be dissolved; the black particles have to be lifted out of the weave, and on fine fabric a few may stay. A flowing shalwar hem or a loose dupatta end is exactly what a bicycle or motorbike chain catches. For cooking oil and other everyday marks, see our stain roundup.
Steps for washable cotton and lawn
On sturdy fabric that the care label says can be washed, test your detergent on a hidden seam, then work through these steps.
- Lift: scrape the excess off with a blunt knife or the edge of a card. Do not wipe it, which spreads it.
- Back it: lay the stain face down on a pad of kitchen paper, so the grease is pushed out rather than deeper in.
- Break it down: work a few drops of washing-up liquid or heavy-duty liquid detergent into the back of the mark with a fingertip or a soft toothbrush, and leave it for a few minutes.
- Rinse: flush with water from the back, as warm as the fabric allows.
- Repeat: move to a clean patch of paper and repeat until little more grey comes out.
- Wash: wash at the warmest temperature on the label, with dark items or on its own.
- Check before drying: air dry only. Heat from a tumble dryer or iron sets any oil left behind.
Stubborn marks
If a grey shadow survives the wash, a solvent-based stain remover sold for grease can help on cotton. Follow the product’s instructions, test it on a hidden seam, use it in a well-ventilated room and wash the garment again afterwards. Do not improvise with petrol, thinners or similar chemicals, which strip colour and are hazardous to use at home.
What is realistic on chiffon and silk
Chiffon, georgette and silk cannot take scrubbing: the threads shift, and you end up with a fuzzy, stretched patch that looks worse than the stain. On synthetic chiffon, dab rather than rub, using a little washing-up liquid diluted in water and rinsing gently. Silk is better taken to a dry cleaner untreated, with a note that the mark is chain grease, since solvent cleaning handles oil well. Our guide to chiffon for kameez and dupattas covers the fabric itself. On any fine fabric, expect that metal particles may leave a faint grey trace even when the grease has gone.
Keeping clothes clear of the chain
Prevention is far easier than removal. On days you ride, you might choose straight trousers or cigarette pants over a wide shalwar; our trouser styles guide shows the options, and you can ask for a narrower leg on your next outfit through custom stitching. Add it to your quote request, and we confirm it on your design.
- Wrap the dupatta round your shoulders and tuck the ends in, or carry it in a bag.
- Use a trouser clip or band at the ankle on the chain side.
- Fit a chain guard to the bike if it does not have one.
Common questions
Can I put a greasy shalwar straight in the washing machine?
It is better to pre-treat it first. A normal wash spreads some of the grease and leaves a grey shadow, and if the shalwar is then dried with heat, the mark sets.
Will chain grease come out of a white cotton shalwar completely?
Often, with pre-treatment and a warm wash, but fine black particles can leave a faint grey trace. Repeating the pre-treatment before the first drying gives the best chance.
Is chain grease the same as a cooking oil stain?
No. Cooking oil is mostly oil, while chain grease also carries metal particles and road dirt that have to be lifted out separately, so it usually needs more rounds of treatment.
