Chiffon for kameez and dupattas: how to wear it and have it stitched

How chiffon behaves in a kameez and dupatta, why it needs lining and careful seams, how to wear it without slipping or snagging, and what to ask your tailor for.

What chiffon is

Chiffon is a very light, sheer fabric woven from tightly twisted yarns, which give it a faint grainy feel and its famous float. It can be silk, but most chiffon in unstitched suits and dupattas is polyester or a blend, which is easier to care for and holds colour well. Brands use it for festive and Eid collections, often with embroidery on the front panel, the sleeves and the dupatta border.

Chiffon is lovely to wear and demanding to sew. It slips while it is being cut, frays easily and shows every seam through its surface, so the way it is stitched matters as much as the fabric itself. If you are deciding between chiffon and its heavier cousin, our georgette vs chiffon guide compares the two.

How a chiffon kameez is usually built

A well-made chiffon kameez looks effortless because of details you barely see. These are the ones to discuss with your tailor.

  • A lining or inner: the body is almost always lined or worn over a separate slip, because chiffon is see-through. Some suits include a plain inner fabric; many do not. Our lining guide covers the choices.
  • Sheer sleeves: sleeves are often left unlined by design. Tell us if you prefer them lined, or lined only to the elbow.
  • Enclosed seams: French seams or narrow bound seams hide the raw edges, which would otherwise show through as a dark line.
  • Fine hems: a narrow rolled hem keeps the edge light. A wide, heavy hem pulls chiffon down and looks bulky.
  • Embroidered panels: embroidery adds weight in places, so the lining and seams are planned around the worked areas.
  • Flared hems: chiffon cut on a curve can drop unevenly as it hangs, so it is worth asking for a flared hem to be levelled with that in mind.

Wearing a chiffon dupatta

A chiffon dupatta is light enough to drape over one shoulder, across both or over the head, but that lightness also means it slides. A few habits help.

  • Pin it: a small safety pin or a brooch at the shoulder or the back of the neck keeps it in place through a long day.
  • Mind jewellery and bags: rings, bracelets, bag clasps and hook-and-loop fastenings catch chiffon and pull threads. Put the dupatta on last and take it off first.
  • Over the head: chiffon slips on smooth hair, so an under-scarf or cap gives it something to grip.
  • Finish the edges: a raw-edged dupatta frays quickly. A rolled hem, piping or light lace makes it last; see our dupatta finishing ideas.
  • Keep trims light: heavy lace or long beaded tassels can drag a fine chiffon dupatta out of shape.

Chiffon for everyday and for Eid

Chiffon is usually saved for Eid, dinners and gatherings, but it can work day to day. A plain chiffon dupatta lifts a cotton or cambric kurta without adding warmth, and a lined printed chiffon kameez suits a family lunch. For the office, chiffon sleeves or a chiffon dupatta over a structured kurta are easier to wear than a full chiffon suit. Our Eid ideas and weekend and gatherings page have pairings.

In colder months, a lined chiffon suit with a shawl over the top is comfortable indoors. Think about the journey: chiffon crushes under a heavy coat, so a light steam on arrival helps. Our ironing and steaming guide shows how to do it without shine or scorch marks. For washing, most chiffon is best hand washed in cool water, or dry cleaned if it is embellished; always follow the care label.

What to tell us when ordering

On the stitching quote form, say which pieces are chiffon, whether an inner fabric is included and whether you want the sleeves lined or sheer. Photograph the embroidered panels in daylight and mention the dupatta finish you want. If you are unsure, choose “advise me” and we’ll suggest a lining and seam finish in your quote. The unstitched suit stitching page explains the rest of the process.

Common questions

Does a chiffon kameez need lining?

Almost always, yes. Chiffon is sheer, so the body is lined or worn over a separate inner, while the sleeves are often left sheer by design.

How do I stop my chiffon dupatta slipping?

Pin it at the shoulder or the back of the neck with a small safety pin or brooch. If you wear it over your head, an under-scarf or cap underneath gives the chiffon something to grip.

Can chiffon be machine washed?

Some polyester chiffon can go on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag, but hand washing in cool water is gentler and embellished chiffon is safer dry cleaned. Always follow the garment’s care label.
