How many abayas do you need? A count by lifestyle

How many abayas do I need? A working count for daily wearers, occasional wearers and travellers, based on wash rotation and the settings you dress for.

A working number

If you wear an abaya every day, four or five covers most lives: three for everyday rotation, one smarter one and one dressy one. If you wear one occasionally, two is enough. For a trip, pack two or three whatever the length of the stay. These are starting points, and the reasoning behind them lets you adjust the count to your own week.

The rotation sum for daily wearers

The everyday number comes from washing. An abaya worn over clothes usually goes a few wears between washes, and the cloth is better for a rest and an airing between outings. Then it has to be washed and dried, which takes it out of use for a day or more. With two everyday abayas, one bad day (rain, a spill, a late wash) leaves you with nothing clean. With three, there is always one resting, one ready and one that can be in the wash. Our article on how often to wash an abaya explains the intervals.

Add to that base only for a reason:

  • Work or study with a dress code: one or two plainer, sharper abayas kept for it. See office abayas.
  • Gatherings, Eid and weddings as a guest: one dressy abaya, or two if your calendar is full.
  • A real change of season: a lighter cloth for summer and a heavier one for winter, if you live somewhere with both.
  • Small children, cooking or messy work: an extra everyday one, because yours will be washed more.

The occasional wearer

If an abaya is for the mosque, family visits or travel, two do the job: a plain dark one that goes with everything and washes without fuss, and a dressier one for occasions. A single abaya can cover both roles if you choose a plain cut in a fabric with some presence and dress it up with a scarf and bag; everyday vs dressy abaya cuts shows which shapes stretch furthest.

The traveller

For a trip, think in threes at most: one to wear on the journey, one to change into and, for a longer stay or a hot climate, one spare. Choose cloth that resists creasing and dries overnight on a hanger, so a wash in the hotel basin is realistic. Similar colours let one scarf and one pair of shoes serve them all. Sample counts

Put together, the sums look like this.

  • Daily wear, no dress code: 3 everyday and 1 dressy. Total 4.
  • Daily wear plus an office: 2 everyday, 2 for work and 1 dressy. Total 5.
  • Daily wear with hot summers and cold winters: the same, plus 1 or 2 seasonal ones.
  • Occasional wear: 1 plain and 1 dressy. Total 2.
  • Any trip: 2 or 3, all washable.

Building the set over time

Nobody needs to order five at once. Start with the plain everyday abaya, wear it, and correct the length and sleeve on the next; which abaya to have made first explains why. Vary the later ones by fabric weight and detail, not by measurements, so every abaya in the wardrobe is as comfortable as the one you reach for most.

When you do want several, ask for them together on one quote form with a single set of measurements, giving each its own fabric and details. We make abayas to measure from one piece upwards, as Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only, and the written quote lists every piece before you pay.

Common questions

Is one abaya enough?

For occasional wear, yes, if it is plain, dark and easy to wash. For daily wear, one abaya means washing it constantly and having nothing to wear while it dries, so two is the practical minimum and three is comfortable.

Should all my abayas be the same cut?

Keeping the same measurements and a similar cut for your everyday abayas makes sense, because you know it works. Use the dressy and seasonal ones to try a different shape, sleeve or fabric.

How many abayas should I pack for umrah or a long trip?

Two or three is usually enough for any trip if they wash and dry overnight: one on, one drying and one spare. Light, crease-resistant cloth and a plain cut make them easier to care for away from home.
