How loose should a dress or trousers be? Ease by garment

How much room to ask for in a made-to-measure dress, co-ord top, trousers or abaya: what ease means for each garment, how fabric changes it and how to tell us.

Ease is different for every garment

Ease is the room between your body and your clothes, and how loose a garment should be depends on what it is. A fitted dress bodice needs the least, just enough to breathe, sit and lift your arms. A co-ord top needs more so it hangs straight. Trousers need room in the seat and thigh more than anywhere else, and an abaya, worn over other clothes, needs the most of all.

You do not add ease yourself. You give us your body measurements and tell us how you like each garment to feel, and the room is added when the pattern is drawn. Our article ease explained covers the kameez; this one looks at the other things we make.

Dresses: close at the bodice, free below

A dress with a waist seam is the most exact garment to fit. The bodice should follow the body without pulling across the bust when you reach forward, and the waist seam should sit level with room to breathe after a meal. Below the waist, the skirt shape decides the ease: an A-line or tiered skirt has plenty, while a pencil or column shape needs enough width at the hips to sit down comfortably.

Button-front and shirt dress styles need a little more room at the bust than a zipped dress, so the buttons lie flat when you move. If you want a fitted look, tell us “close but not tight” rather than taking your measurements tighter.

Co-ord tops and kurtas worn with trousers

Co-ord tops come in two families. A tailored top follows the body like a shirt and needs moderate room at the bust and waist. A boxy top hangs straight from the shoulders and needs ease at the hips most of all, because that is where it can catch and ride up. If you will wear a layer underneath in winter, or tuck the top in, say so: both change how much room is needed.

Trousers: the seat and the thigh

Trousers that feel tight are usually short of room in the seat, the thigh or the rise, not the waist. Sit on a chair and cross your legs: that is the movement trousers must allow. Slim cigarette pants need a careful balance, close enough to look sleek and roomy enough to sit. Wide trousers and shalwars have ease built in through the leg, but the seat still has to fit.

If you sit on the floor often, or like to sit cross-legged, mention it. It is a common reason for asking for a little more room through the hips and rise.

Abayas and anything worn over clothes

An abaya is worn over other clothes, so it needs room for whatever is underneath. Give us your body measurements and tell us what you usually wear under it, such as a long kameez, jeans and a jumper, or a light dress. Sleeves need special thought: they have to slide over the sleeves underneath without bunching. Our made-to-measure abaya page explains how abayas are quoted, and any style, fabric or detail you want is something to ask for in the quote.

How fabric and climate change the answer

Stiff or heavy fabrics, such as karandi and khaddar, do not drape over the body, so they need a little more room to feel comfortable. Soft, drapey fabrics can be cut closer because they move with you. Climate matters too: in the humid heat of Doha, most people prefer a relaxed fit that lets air move, while a winter outfit in a cold country may need room for a thermal layer.

How to tell us the fit you want

On the quote form, give your body measurements and describe the fit for each piece: close, regular or relaxed. A comparison helps even more, such as “like my favourite shirt, slightly looser at the hips”. If you have a garment whose fit you love, you can measure it too, labelled as garment measurements.

If you are sending a design or reference photo, start a design quote; our page on stitching your own design shows how a design is agreed. Measurements and fit are confirmed in writing before cutting.

Common questions

Should I add extra centimetres to my measurements for a looser fit?

No. Give your true body measurements and describe the fit you want. The room is added when the pattern is drawn, so adding it yourself means it is added twice.

Why do my trousers feel tight when the waist fits?

Tightness in trousers usually comes from too little room in the seat, the thigh or the rise. Sitting down and crossing your legs is a good test of whether there is enough.

How loose should an abaya be?

Loose enough to go over what you usually wear underneath, including the sleeves. Tell us what you plan to wear under it and give your body measurements, and the room is allowed for in the cut.
