Graduation abaya: what works with a gown and hood
A graduation abaya under your academic gown: avoiding sleeve bulk, a neckline that suits the hood, a safe length for stage steps and colours for photos.
InspirationYes, an abaya works under a gown
An abaya sits comfortably under an academic gown as long as the sleeves are not too full, the neckline leaves room for the hood, and the hem stays clear of your shoes on the stage steps. A slim or straight cut in a matte, medium-weight fabric is the easiest choice.
Gowns differ between universities and degrees, so check your own institution’s dress guidance first. Our graduation outfit ideas cover suits and dresses under the gown; this article looks at the abaya specifically.
Sleeves: the main source of bulk
Academic gowns have their own sleeves, which can be wide, long or closed at the end. A bell or butterfly sleeve underneath bunches inside them and pushes the gown away from your body, which shows in photographs as a lumpy arm. A fitted or gently tapered sleeve with a neat cuff slides through easily.
Check the sleeve length too. A cuff that shows a little below the gown sleeve looks tidy; one that drops over your hand gets in the way when you shake hands and hold the scroll or certificate. Our guide to abaya sleeve length and cuffs shows how to measure.
The neckline and the hood
The hood sits around the back of the neck and over the shoulders, and is usually held in place at the front. It needs a smooth base. A stand collar, ruffle or heavy embroidery at the neck pushes it up and makes it sit crooked.
- Choose a plain round or high round neckline with no bulky collar.
- Leave a small loop or button at the centre front of the abaya if your hood needs something to fasten to.
- If you wear a scarf, decide where its pins go before the day, so they do not clash with the hood’s fastening at the throat.
- Keep embroidery away from the shoulders and upper back, where the hood covers it anyway.
Length for the stage steps
Walking up a few steps in front of an audience, with a gown over the top, is when a long hem causes trouble. Measure the length with the shoes you will wear, as explained in measuring an abaya length to the floor, and stop just above the top of the shoe rather than on the floor. A hem that skims the ankle is far safer on stairs than one that sweeps the ground.
A moderate width at the hem helps as well. A very narrow abaya restricts your stride on steps, and a very wide one catches under your heels.
Colours that photograph well
Most gowns are black or very dark, and a black abaya underneath gives a clean, unbroken column. A colour shows only at the neck, cuffs and below the gown, which can look striking if it echoes the colour of your hood, or busy if it competes with it. Navy, deep green, burgundy, stone and soft grey photograph well against a dark gown, while bright white can lose detail under strong flash.
Choose a matte or low-sheen fabric. Shiny satin reflects stage lights and camera flash and can look washed out in official photographs.
We make abayas to measure. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is extra, so plan ahead. Send your measurements and ideas through the quote form, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.
Common questions
Should a graduation abaya be open or closed at the front?
Closed is usually easier, because an open abaya under an open gown gives several loose edges to manage on stage. If you prefer an open style, ask for a hidden snap or two to hold it closed for the ceremony.
Can I wear the same abaya to the celebration afterwards?
Yes. Choose one with a little detail at the cuffs or hem, which sits below the gown during the ceremony and shows fully once the gown comes off.
Will a heavy abaya be too warm under a gown?
It can be, especially in a crowded hall in summer. A medium or light fabric is more comfortable with the extra layer of the gown over it.
