Graduation outfit ideas: what to wear under the gown

Graduation outfit ideas for graduates and their families: kurtas, suits and dresses that sit well under a gown and hood, photograph well and stay comfortable.

A long day in front of the camera

The most practical graduation outfit ideas start with the gown: choose a neat neckline that sits under the hood, a kameez or dress that shows a little below the gown’s hem, slim or straight trousers, and shoes you can walk across a stage in. Graduation days are long, with queues for gowns, a ceremony, then hours of photographs outdoors, so comfort matters as much as how you look.

Families have their own decisions to make. Mothers, sisters and grandmothers are in many of the photos too, and a made-to-measure suit or dress means everyone looks polished without anyone shuffling in something that pinches.

What to wear under a graduation gown

  • Neckline: the hood rests on your shoulders and fastens near the throat, so a band collar, a round neck or a small V sits neatly beneath it. Large collars and deep, wide necklines crumple.
  • Length: a gown usually falls around the knee or calf. A kameez that ends just below it looks intentional; one that peeks out by a few centimetres looks like a mistake. Measure the hire gown if you can, or ask the university for its length.
  • Trousers: straight trousers or cigarette pants look sharp in full-length photos and are easy on stairs.
  • Sleeves: the gown’s sleeves are wide, so slim three-quarter or full sleeves underneath sit better than bell sleeves.
  • Dupatta: a full dupatta fights with a hood. Skip it for the ceremony and add it for photos and lunch afterwards.

Colour and fabric for photographs

Most gowns are black, with a coloured hood that shows your subject. A kameez in a contrasting clear colour, such as emerald, mustard, cobalt or a soft rose, makes the photos sing, while a black kameez disappears into the gown. Avoid busy prints that compete with the hood.

Choose fabric for the season. Summer ceremonies suit lawn, cambric or linen; winter ones suit khaddar or karandi with room for a thin layer. A crisp fabric photographs well because it holds its shape, while very soft fabrics can cling in the wind.

Outfits for the family

Parents and relatives can afford to be more festive than the graduate. A three-piece with detailed embroidery, a long A-line kameez or a smart dress with a jacket all look right at a university ceremony and the celebration meal afterwards. If several of you want to coordinate, our guide to coordinated outfits for sisters and friends has ideas that do not look like a uniform.

Two ready ideas from our own designs are the shirt dress, which is smart under a gown, and the tiered maxi dress for a summer garden party afterwards.

Weather, walking and the photographs outside

Most graduation photos are taken outdoors, on lawns, steps and quadrangles, whatever the weather. In a summer ceremony, a breathable cotton keeps you comfortable under a heavy polyester gown, and a light colour stops you overheating in the sun. In a winter ceremony, plan for standing in the cold between buildings: full sleeves, a fabric with some weight and room for a thin layer underneath.

Shoes matter more than people expect. You may walk across a stage in front of hundreds of people, then stand on grass for an hour. Choose low, steady heels or smart flats, and tell us the height when you send measurements, so your trousers break neatly over them rather than dragging or flapping above the ankle.

What to ask for, and timing

In your request, mention that the outfit is for graduation and that it will be worn under a gown, give the gown length if you know it, and choose an embroidery level: none or delicate for the graduate, detailed for family members. Our student and campus outfits guide covers everyday wear for the years before.

Ceremony dates are announced months ahead, so there is plenty of time. Production is 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping is extra. Graduating in Manchester? Common questions

Can I wear a shalwar kameez under a graduation gown?

Yes. Choose a neat neckline that sits under the hood, a kameez length that falls just below the gown, slim trousers and slim sleeves. Leave the dupatta off for the ceremony and add it afterwards.

What colour should I wear to my graduation?

A clear colour that contrasts with a black gown, such as emerald, mustard, cobalt or rose, photographs well. Avoid black and busy prints that compete with the hood.

Can my mother and I order outfits together?

Yes. List both outfits on one quote request with each person’s measurements, and the written quote covers them together.
