Should you hang or fold shalwar kameez and kurtas?

Hang or fold kurtas and shalwar kameez? Decide by fabric and weight: what to hang, what to fold, which hanger to use, and how to stop bumps forming at the shoulders.

The quick rule

Hang kurtas and kameez in woven cotton, lawn, cambric, linen and khaddar, especially the ones you want to wear without pressing. Fold anything heavy or stretchy, such as viscose, knits and kameez with heavy work, and most shalwars and trousers. If a garment would pull itself out of shape on a hanger, it belongs on a shelf.

This is about everyday suits. Dupattas and heavily embroidered formal pieces have their own needs, covered in our guide to storing dupattas and embroidered suits.

What to hang and what to fold

Weight and stretch decide it more than the type of garment does.

  • Hang: lawn, cambric and cotton kurtas, linen and khaddar kameez, shirt-style kameez with collars and plackets, and anything you wear often.
  • Hang with care: chiffon and georgette kameez, on padded hangers, with the dupatta folded separately.
  • Fold: viscose and rayon kurtas, which slowly lengthen when hung for weeks; knitted tops; kameez with heavy embroidery or beading at the neck or yoke.
  • Fold or clip-hang: shalwars, palazzos and straight trousers, folded along their creases or hung by the waistband from a clip hanger.
  • Roll: lawn and cotton pieces in a drawer or suitcase, which roll without hard crease lines.

Choosing the right hanger

Most shoulder problems come from the hanger rather than the hanging. Thin wire hangers put all the weight on two points and leave bumps. Hangers wider than the garment push the shoulder seams out into peaks, and ones that are too narrow let the kameez slide until it hangs from the neckline.

  • Choose a shaped hanger with rounded ends, roughly as wide as your own shoulders.
  • Use a velvet or padded hanger for slippery fabrics, so they stay put instead of crumpling on the wardrobe floor.
  • Close the top button or hook so the neckline keeps its shape.
  • Hang deep colours inside out if the wardrobe gets daylight, which fades exposed shoulders.
  • Leave space on the rail, so garments are not squeezed into new creases.

Getting rid of shoulder bumps

If a kurta already has bumps, steam the area from the inside or dampen it lightly, smooth it flat with your hand, and press it on the reverse at the temperature the label allows. Our article on ironing and steaming kurtas has the settings. In knitted and viscose fabric a bump sometimes stays because the fibres have stretched; folding those pieces from then on stops it getting worse.

Folding without hard creases

Fold a kameez in from the side seams, then in half or in thirds across the body, keeping folds away from embroidery where you can. A sheet of acid-free tissue or a plain cotton cloth inside the folds softens the crease. Stack heavier pieces at the bottom, and refold anything that stays put for months along new lines now and then.

How a kurta hangs on the body also depends on how it was cut. Our cuts guide shows the main shapes, and you can ask for any of them through custom stitching. Describe the fabric you have in mind in your quote request, and we confirm what works on your design.

Common questions

Is it bad to hang a heavy embroidered kameez?

Over weeks, heavy work can stretch the shoulders and neckline. Fold it with tissue or cotton between the layers, and hang it only for a short time before you wear it.

Should shalwars be hung or folded?

Either works. Fold them along their natural creases on a shelf, or hang them by the waistband from a clip hanger with soft pads so the clips do not mark the fabric.

Why do my kurtas stretch at the neck on hangers?

Usually the hanger is too narrow or the neckline is left open, so the kameez slides and hangs from the neck. Use a wider shaped hanger and close the top fastening.
