Why a new dark suit leaves colour on your skin or bag

Why is dye rubbing off my clothes? A new dark suit can shed loose surface dye onto skin, bags and seats without any water. Why it happens and how to settle it.

Loose dye on the surface

Dye rubs off new clothes when some colour sits loose on the surface of the fibres instead of being fully fixed inside them. Friction alone moves it, so a new black shalwar can leave a grey tint on your legs, or a navy kameez can mark a pale handbag, without a drop of water. The textile term is crocking, and on most garments a few washes remove the surplus.

It is most common with deep shades such as black, navy, maroon, bottle green and indigo, especially in cotton and khaddar, which take up a lot of dye. It gets worse when the fabric is damp from rain or sweat, because moisture helps loose dye travel.

Why a finished outfit does it

A few things make rub-off more likely on a new suit.

  • Deep colours: more dye goes in, so more can be left on the surface after manufacture.
  • Thick or textured weaves: khaddar and slub cottons hold loose dye in their texture.
  • Fabric stitched without a wash: many unstitched suits are made up straight from the pack, so the first wear is the first time the surplus is disturbed.
  • Friction points: inner thighs, underarms, the shoulder under a bag strap and your back against a car seat get the most rubbing.

Settling it with a few washes

Wash the garment on its own, inside out, in cool water with ordinary detergent, and rinse it well. Repeat until the rinse water stays clear and a white cloth rubbed firmly on the dry fabric picks up little or no colour. Colour-catcher sheets in the drum help absorb what is released. Our article on washing machine settings for kurtas covers the cycle.

Salt and vinegar do little to fix modern factory dyes; washing out the surplus is what works. If the fabric still rubs off heavily after several washes, the dye was poorly fixed and may never settle completely, which is worth raising with whoever sold you the fabric.

What to keep apart in the meantime

Until the colour settles, a little planning saves your other things. Fresh transfer on a fabric bag often comes out in a normal wash; on leather, follow the maker’s cleaning advice and test a hidden spot, because solvents can lift the leather’s own finish.

  • Carry a dark bag, or one with a wipeable surface, and keep pale leather and canvas away from the fabric.
  • Lay a dark cloth over a light car seat or sofa if you will sit for a long time.
  • Wear a dark or old layer underneath rather than a favourite white vest.
  • Do not pair it with a pale dupatta or trousers on a damp day, and never leave them folded together while wet.
  • If colour transfers to your skin, it washes off with soap and water like any surface mark.

Before your next outfit is made

If you are sending fabric for Stitching Only, the rub test in our colour-fastness guide shows whether a deep colour is likely to transfer, and you can mention the result in your quote request. Whether to wash the fabric before it is cut is covered in should you pre-wash fabric before stitching.

Common questions

Is dye rubbing off a sign of poor quality?

Not necessarily. A little surface dye on new deep colours is common and usually washes out. Heavy rub-off that carries on after several washes suggests the dye was not properly fixed.

Will dry cleaning stop dye rubbing off?

It may remove some of the surplus, but if the label allows washing, a few cool washes in water usually clear it more effectively.

Why does it happen more when I sweat?

Moisture loosens surface dye, so damp patches transfer far more colour than dry fabric. It is the same loose dye, just moving more easily.
