A ceremony first, a party second

A good nikkah guest outfit is modest and graceful before it is anything else: a long kameez with full or three-quarter sleeves, a higher neckline, relaxed trousers and a dupatta large enough to cover your hair. The nikkah is the marriage contract itself, so it is a religious ceremony with a khutbah, the offer and acceptance, signatures and a dua, followed by food and congratulations.

Where it happens shapes the outfit. A nikkah in a masjid usually means covered hair, separate seating and possibly sitting on the carpet. At home, it may be a small family gathering in a living room. In a hall, it is often combined with a larger reception. Ask the family which it is before you choose.

Modest nikkah guest outfit ideas

  • A long straight kameez with full sleeves: a straight kameez to the calf, with full sleeves and straight trousers, is simple and always appropriate.
  • A band-collar kurta: the band collar sits close at the neck and looks neat with or without a dupatta draped over it.
  • A softly flared A-line suit: movement in the skirt of the kameez without clinging, lined if the fabric is fine.
  • A made-to-measure abaya: for a masjid nikkah, an abaya in a soft colour with a little detail at the cuffs is elegant and practical. Abayas are made to measure, as Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only.
  • A long dress with sleeves: a Western maxi with a high neckline and a matching scarf, if that is how you usually dress.

The dupatta does a lot of work

At a nikkah you may wear your dupatta over your hair for an hour or more, so its size and fabric matter more than at a party. A dupatta that is too narrow slides off; one that is too slippery needs constant adjusting. Cotton, lawn and georgette grip better than very fine chiffon. Our guide to dupatta sizes and styles explains the measurements to ask for.

If you prefer a separate scarf for your hair, ask for it to be cut from the same fabric as the kameez, or in a plain shade picked out of the print, so the outfit still looks planned.

Colour is easier at a nikkah than at other events. Soft shades such as mint, peach, powder blue, lilac and ivory suit the mood of the ceremony, and deeper colours work for an evening nikkah in a hall. Leave the brightest, most dramatic outfit for the mehndi or the reception; at the nikkah, quiet elegance is what people remember.

What to ask for: fabric, embroidery and length

Our article on modest dressing shows how sleeves, necklines and lengths work together. For a nikkah specifically, put these in your quote request:

  • Fabric: lawn or cambric for a daytime summer ceremony, cotton silk or jacquard for a hall, khaddar or a velvet shawl in winter.
  • Embroidery level: delicate (neckline or sleeves) or detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem). Statement work can feel too much for the ceremony itself unless the family has said otherwise.
  • Length: calf or floor. A longer kameez is easier when you sit on a carpet, because it covers your knees without tugging.
  • Lining: ask for sleeves and bodice to be lined if your fabric is sheer, so the outfit stays modest in bright daylight.

Ordering for a nikkah, including from Saudi Arabia

A nikkah is sometimes arranged with less notice than a full wedding. We do not offer rush orders: production is 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping to you is separate. For Stitching Only, your fabric needs to reach us in Pakistan first. Tell us your date when you enquire, and the written quote shows the processing time and delivery arrangements before you commit.

Guests in the Kingdom can read our Saudi Arabia page and the custom design service there; quotes are in US dollars, euros or pounds, whichever you prefer. If you have a picture of a modest outfit you like, request a quote and attach it.

Common questions

What should a woman wear to a nikkah as a guest?

A modest, elegant outfit: a long kameez with full or three-quarter sleeves, a higher neckline, relaxed trousers and a dupatta that can cover your hair. Soft colours and light embroidery suit the ceremony.

Do I need to cover my hair at a nikkah?

It depends on the venue and the family. Women usually cover their hair in a masjid, so bring a dupatta or scarf large enough to stay in place. At home or in a hall, follow the hosts.

Can I order a nikkah outfit at short notice?

Rush orders are not offered. Production is 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, plus shipping time to you, so tell us your date when you enquire.
