Straight Kameez: The Classic Straight Shirt Design
Also called straight shirt
Quick answer
A straight kameez falls in a fairly even line from the underarm to the hem, so it’s about as wide at the bottom as at the hips. It’s the classic shalwar kameez shape: long, clean and slightly tailored, and the best cut for bold prints and straight borders. It needs side slits and enough room at the hip to sit comfortably.
What it is
A straight kameez, often simply called a straight shirt, usually has a little shaping at the waist, from darts or gently curved side seams, and then drops straight to the hem. Side slits let you walk and sit. It can be cut close for a tailored look or relaxed for comfort; the shape stays the same and only the ease changes.
Who and what it suits
- Tall frames: a long straight kameez is hard to beat.
- Petite frames: at knee length, over slim trousers in a matching colour, it gives one long line.
- Straight up and down figures: light waist shaping adds definition.
- Bold prints and borders: nothing competes with the print, and a straight daman shows a border without cutting it.
- Work and campus: smart with cigarette pants or straight trousers.
Fabrics, slits and trousers
A straight cut behaves predictably in almost any fabric, from lawn and cambric to khaddar, linen and silk. It uses the least fabric of the main cuts, so it usually fits a standard unstitched kameez piece, though a tall wearer wanting calf length and full sleeves should check first.
Slits are essential on a knee or calf-length straight kameez, and hip height is the classic choice; see our side slits guide. A straight shirt with cigarette pants makes a long, slim, modern line; with a shalwar or straight trousers it looks classic. The longer the kameez, the slimmer the trousers.
Measurements that matter
Hips matter most: cut too close, a straight kameez pulls across the seat and the slits gape when you sit. Our guide to ease explains how much room to allow. Bust and waist set the shaping above, and kameez length, from the highest point of the shoulder beside the neck, decides the proportions.
How to ask for it
On the stitching quote form, choose your kameez length and write “straight cut” in the design notes, with the slit height and how fitted you like it. Measurements can be in inches or centimetres. If you already have a straight kameez that fits well, choose “Send a garment that fits” as your measuring method, or measure it and add a photo; it’s the quickest way to get the same shape.
Common questions
What trousers go with a straight kameez?
Cigarette pants, straight trousers, a classic shalwar or churidar. A long straight shirt with cigarette pants is the slimmest, most modern combination.
Should a straight kameez be fitted or loose?
Either works, and it’s a matter of taste and comfort. What matters most is enough room at the hip, so it doesn’t pull when you sit or make the slits gape.
