Printed abayas: choosing a print that stays calm

Choosing a printed abaya: print scale, background colour, matching the pattern at the front opening and seams, and how a print affects opacity and fabric quantity.

Scale and background do most of the work

A printed abaya stays calm when the print is small or tonal and sits on a dark or muted background. Large, high-contrast motifs on a pale ground make a full-length garment very bold, because an abaya shows a great deal of uninterrupted fabric. Most of the decisions below follow from that: how big the print is, how strongly it contrasts with its background, and how it meets itself at the seams and the front opening.

Choosing the print

Look at the fabric from across a room, not just up close, because that is how an abaya is usually seen.

  • Small or ditsy prints: read as texture from a distance and forgive creases and lint. Easy to wear every day.
  • Medium florals and geometrics: visible but not loud, especially on navy, black, olive or a deep neutral.
  • Large motifs: dramatic, and where they land matters. A big flower centred on the chest or the hip draws the eye there.
  • Tonal prints: black on black, or navy on navy, give pattern only when light catches it. The calmest option.
  • Background colour: a dark ground keeps any print quieter; a pale ground makes even a small print stand out.

Matching at the front and the seams

On a plain fabric, seams disappear. On a print, every seam is a place where the pattern can jump. Small, random prints hide this; regular stripes, checks and large motifs do not. The places that show most are the centre front, especially where an open abaya’s two edges meet, the centre back and the side seams at eye level.

Matching means cutting each piece so the pattern lines up across the seam, which uses extra fabric, often roughly one extra pattern repeat per piece. Directional prints, where every flower points up, add more again, because every piece has to face the same way. Our article on choosing colours and prints for a custom design covers placement on other garments too.

Opacity and the back of the cloth

Most prints sit on the surface, so the back of the fabric is paler, sometimes almost white. On an abaya this shows wherever the inside turns out: at an open front edge, at turned-back cuffs and when the hem lifts as you walk. Facings in a plain matching colour, or a lining, hide it. Prints on a pale background can also be more see-through than you expect, so hold the fabric up to daylight before choosing it.

The way a print was made also matters for feel and fading. Our guide to block, digital and screen prints explains the differences, and for woven pattern instead of print, see jacquard abayas.

Ordering a printed abaya

Say how important pattern matching is to you, and send a clear photo of the fabric flat with a ruler or tape beside it so the repeat can be judged; our guide on photographing fabric for a quote shows how. With your own fabric, we confirm before you post it that there is enough for matching, and with Fabric + Stitching the quote names the printed fabric we propose. We make abayas to measure and agree the placement of any large motif in writing before cutting. Start on the Stitching Only quote form or the main quote form.

Common questions

Is a floral abaya suitable for everyday wear?

Yes, especially a small floral on a dark background, which hides marks and creases better than plain black. Larger florals are usually kept for gatherings and holidays.

Does a printed abaya need more fabric than a plain one?

Often, yes. Matching a regular pattern or keeping a directional print the right way up uses extra length, so the quantity depends on the size of the repeat and the cut.

Can a printed abaya have a plain trim?

A plain band on the front edges, cuffs or hem in one of the print’s colours frames the pattern and also hides the pale back of the cloth at the opening.
