What size is a shawl? Standard length and width
Shawl size in inches, cm and metres: a ladies’ shawl is about 40 by 80 inches, a winter suit shawl about 2.5 metres long and a chadar larger again.
InspirationA ladies’ shawl is about 1 metre by 2 metres
The most common size for a woman’s shawl is about 40 inches wide and 80 inches long: 100 by 200 cm, or 1 metre by 2. The shawl that comes with a winter unstitched suit is often longer, around 2.5 metres (98 inches), because it is cut like a dupatta from a heavier cloth. A chadar, the large wrap that covers the head and upper body, is bigger again, commonly 50 to 54 inches wide and 90 to 108 inches long (roughly 1.25 to 1.4 metres by 2.25 to 2.75 metres).
None of these is an official standard. Weavers and brands choose their own dimensions, so read the listing or measure the piece.
Typical sizes side by side
Width first, then length, in inches with centimetres in brackets.
- Stole: 20 to 28 by 70 to 80 inches (50 to 70 by 180 to 200 cm).
- Ladies’ shawl: about 40 by 80 inches (100 by 200 cm).
- Winter suit shawl: the width follows the cloth, commonly 40 to 45 inches (100 to 114 cm), and the length is about 98 inches (250 cm).
- Chadar or large wrap: about 50 to 54 by 90 to 108 inches (127 to 137 by 229 to 274 cm).
- Dupatta, for comparison: 36 to 44 by 89 to 98 inches (90 to 112 by 225 to 250 cm).
How a shawl differs from a dupatta
On paper a suit shawl and a dupatta can have almost the same measurements. The difference is the cloth and the job it does. A dupatta is light, often sheer, and is draped for coverage and for the look of the outfit. A shawl is woven or brushed for warmth, from fabrics such as khaddar, karandi, marina, wool blends or velvet, so it is thicker, heavier and less inclined to slip.
That weight changes how the size feels. Two and a half metres of chiffon gathers into almost nothing on one shoulder; the same length of khaddar is a real layer, closer to a light blanket. It is why shawls sold separately are usually shorter, at about 2 metres, and wider, so they wrap round the shoulders instead of trailing. Our winter fabrics guide compares the cloths, and the pages on khaddar and karandi go into each.
Choosing a size that works on you
Think about how you wear a shawl most often, then check the width before the length.
- Wrapped round the shoulders: 2 metres is enough for most heights, with the ends falling to around the thigh in front.
- One end thrown back over the opposite shoulder: this uses extra length, so tall wearers often prefer 2.25 to 2.5 metres.
- Over the head as well as the shoulders: look for chadar proportions, at least 50 inches (127 cm) wide, so there is depth to cover the head and still reach the waist.
- Petite frames: a full 2.5 metre suit shawl in thick cloth can overwhelm. Wearing it folded in half lengthwise, or having it finished shorter, keeps it in proportion.
- Compare with one you own: measure a shawl you find comfortable and match its width first, since width is what decides warmth and coverage.
Shawls in a made-to-measure order
When a winter suit includes a shawl piece, tell us its length and width with your photos, and whether you want it left full size or finished shorter. On a Stitching Only order, ask in your quote for the edge finish you want, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design. A spare shawl can sometimes become a garment instead, as our guide to turning a dupatta or shawl into a kurta explains.
To start, send the details through the quote form. Measurements can be in inches or centimetres, and everything is agreed in writing before cutting.
