Shayla, hijab or dupatta: what is the difference?

Shayla vs hijab vs dupatta: how the three scarves differ in shape, size and fabric, how each is worn with an abaya or a suit, and when one can stand in for another.

Three scarves in one sentence each

A hijab is the general word for a headscarf (and, more widely, for modest dress), and as a single item it usually means a rectangle or square that covers the hair and neck and is pinned fairly closely. A shayla is one particular kind: a long, narrow rectangle wrapped loosely round the head and pinned at the side, the scarf most often seen with an abaya in the Gulf. A dupatta is a longer, wider scarf that belongs to the shalwar kameez, worn across the shoulders, over one shoulder or loosely over the head, and usually made as part of a three-piece suit.

So the difference is mostly shape, size and the outfit each one grew up with. All three can cover the head; they just do it in different ways.

Side by side

Names overlap between countries and sellers, so treat these as the common meanings rather than fixed definitions.

  • Hijab: comes in rectangles, squares folded into a triangle, and ready-to-wear pull-on styles such as the two-piece al-amira (a fitted under-cap with a tube scarf over it). Typical fabrics are jersey, viscose, cotton, crepe and chiffon. It is shaped and pinned to stay put all day.
  • Shayla: long and fairly narrow, in light fabrics such as chiffon, georgette or fine crepe. It is wrapped once round the head with one end falling over the shoulder, then pinned near the ear or at the shoulder. Traditionally black to go with a black abaya, it now comes in every colour.
  • Dupatta: noticeably longer and wider than most hijabs. Fabrics range from lawn and cotton to chiffon, organza, net and silk, often printed or embroidered to match the kameez. Our guide to dupatta sizes gives the usual measurements.

How each one goes with an abaya or a suit

With an abaya, the shayla and the hijab are the usual partners. Many women match the scarf exactly to the abaya, others pick a tone lighter or darker; our article on black or coloured abayas touches on how scarf colour changes the look.

With a shalwar kameez, the dupatta is part of the design: its print, border or embroidery is planned with the kameez. Some women wear a separate hijab for coverage and drape the dupatta over the shoulders as well; others wear the dupatta over the head on its own. Our guide to styling a dupatta for every neckline shows the common drapes, and modest dressing covers how scarves work with sleeves and lengths.

When one can stand in for another

How much coverage you want is your own choice; this is only about what works practically.

  • A dupatta worn as a hijab: often works with a light lawn, cotton or chiffon dupatta. Fold it in half lengthwise first, or the extra width bunches at the neck. Organza and net are slippery and sheer, and heavy embroidery weighs the scarf down, so those are better kept for draping.
  • A shayla with a suit: a neat, plain alternative to a dupatta for everyday wear, though it covers less across the front of the kameez because it is narrower.
  • A hijab instead of a dupatta: fine for daily errands. For an occasion outfit, the suit can look unfinished without its dupatta, since the two were designed together.

Ordering a matching scarf or dupatta

When we make a three-piece suit, the dupatta is one of the pieces you can choose, and a scarf can be quoted together with a made-to-measure abaya. Give the size and edge finish you want in your notes, and we confirm what suits the fabric in the written quote.

If you are sending your own fabric for stitching, say whether a scarf should come from the same length, as described in our guide to stitching an abaya from your own fabric. We confirm the quantity needed before you post anything. You can start a quote here.

Common questions

Is a shayla a type of hijab?

In everyday speech, yes: many people call any headscarf a hijab, and a shayla is one style. When people compare the two, hijab usually means a wider rectangle or square pinned more closely around the face.

What fabric is a shayla usually made from?

Light fabrics that wrap without bulk: chiffon and georgette are the most common, with fine crepe and jersey for a more opaque, less slippery scarf.

Why is a dupatta so much wider than a hijab?

A dupatta is draped across the body as well as the head, often worn open or pleated over the shoulders, so the extra width gives it volume and covers the front of the kameez.
