What is crinkle chiffon? Texture and uses

What is crinkle chiffon? Sheer chiffon with a permanent crushed texture. How it differs from plain chiffon, why it grips and hides creases, and what it suits best.

Chiffon with the crinkle set in

Crinkle chiffon is ordinary sheer chiffon that has been pressed into fine, irregular folds and set with heat, so the texture stays after washing. Sellers also call it crushed or crush chiffon. Underneath the ripples it is the same light, airy cloth as plain chiffon, and most of it is polyester.

The texture is made by bunching, twisting or pleating the cloth and heating it in that shape. Polyester softens with heat and keeps whatever shape it cools in, which is why it holds a crinkle so well. Silk chiffon can be crinkled too, but its texture tends to relax with washing and steaming, so a silk crinkle is the more delicate choice.

How it behaves next to plain chiffon

The two look like cousins on a hanger, but they wear quite differently.

  • Grip: the ridged surface catches on itself, on hair and on other fabric, so a crinkle dupatta or scarf slides off the shoulder far less than smooth chiffon.
  • Creases: there is nothing flat for a crease to show on. Sitting, packing and folding marks simply disappear into the texture, and it needs no ironing.
  • Sheerness: the folds overlap, so it looks slightly less transparent than one flat layer, but it is still sheer.
  • Give: the crinkle opens out when pulled across its ridges, which adds a little stretch that plain chiffon does not have.
  • Look: crinkle reads more relaxed and textured; plain chiffon is smoother and makes a calmer ground for embroidery or print.

The texture takes up cloth

Crinkling gathers the cloth, so a length of crinkle chiffon covers less ground in its relaxed state than it would if pressed flat. A dupatta that measures one width hanging loose can be noticeably wider pulled open. Most crinkles run in one direction, so most of the give is across them. Our guide to fabric widths explains why the width printed on a roll matters for cutting.

For a garment this matters twice over. The fabric should be measured relaxed, the way it will hang, not stretched flat. And a cut piece can grow when worn if the crinkle is pulled open, especially across a fitted area, so crinkle chiffon suits loose shapes where a little give does no harm. Stitching flattens the texture along each seam line, which is normal and does not spread.

What it suits, and what it does not

Think of it as a fabric for easy, flowing pieces. It works well for dupattas and scarves, wide or bell sleeves, sheer overlays and loose tunics or tiered skirts worn over a lining. It is also a practical fabric to travel with, since nothing in a suitcase can crease it further.

It is a weaker choice for a fitted kameez, tailored trousers or a closely cut bodice, where the give can pull out of shape. Dense embroidery also sits awkwardly, because the stitching flattens the crinkle around it. As with any chiffon, a kameez or dress body needs a lining; our guide to when a kameez needs lining sets out the options, and our chiffon guide covers wearing chiffon in general.

Caring for it and asking for it

Follow the label first. Crinkle polyester is usually happy with a cool, gentle wash. Rather than pressing it flat, many people twist the damp fabric into a loose rope and let it dry that way, which keeps the crinkle firm. Keep a hot iron well away, as it can flatten the texture for good.

If you would like crinkle chiffon for a dupatta, sleeves or an overlay, describe the texture or send a photo. With Fabric + Stitching we propose fabric to match and confirm what is possible on your design in the written quote; you can ask for a quote here.

Common questions

Is crinkle chiffon see-through?

Yes, though a little less than a single flat layer because the folds overlap. Dupattas and sleeves are usually worn sheer, while a kameez or dress body needs a lining underneath.

Does crinkle chiffon need ironing?

No, and a hot iron can flatten the texture permanently. Hang it to let creases drop out, or steam lightly from a distance if the label allows.

Is crushed chiffon the same as crinkle chiffon?

Sellers use both names for the same kind of permanently textured chiffon. The size and depth of the crinkle vary a great deal, so a close-up photo tells you more than the name.
