Daman Design With Organza: Bands, Panels and Lace

Also called organza wala daman

Quick answer

An organza daman adds a sheer band or panel at the bottom of the kameez, often embroidered and sometimes edged with lace. Because organza is see-through and crisp, the join has to look neat from both sides, so the seams are enclosed or bound. It makes a plain cotton or lawn kameez dressier without adding much weight.

What it is

Organza is a thin, sheer fabric with a crisp, almost papery hand. At the hem it’s used in two main ways: as a band joined to the bottom of the kameez, so the lowest part of the hem is sheer; or as a panel set in above the hem, with the kameez fabric continuing below it. Many festive suit packs include an embroidered organza border meant for exactly this.

Who and what it suits

  • Eid and gatherings: an embroidered organza daman is dressy without being heavy. See our Eid ideas.
  • Cotton, cambric and cotton silk: organza sits best against fabrics with some body; next to very fine lawn it can overpower the base.
  • Straight and A-line cuts: a level hem shows an organza border cleanly.
  • Everyday wear: keep organza to one feature, such as the daman or the sleeves, so the outfit doesn’t feel formal.

Sheer seams and finishing

Seam allowances show through organza, so the join between the organza and the kameez fabric is usually enclosed, French seamed or bound, and the lower edge is finished with a narrow hem, a facing or lace. Cut edges fray readily, and needle holes and pressed creases can stay visible, which is why it helps to settle the design before cutting.

Lace along the bottom of an organza band, or a line of lace covering the join, gives the organza and lace look. The trousers show through a sheer band, so choose trousers that go with it.

Measurements that matter

The kameez length includes the organza, so say how deep the band or panel should be and where it should start. The hem width (ghera) decides how much organza border you need; on a wide hem, an embroidered border from a suit pack may run across the front only, with a plain organza band at the back. If there are slits, they can run through the organza with the same narrow finish or lace.

How to ask for it

On the stitching quote form, say which pieces are organza and which are the base fabric, how deep the band should be and whether you want lace with it. Upload daylight photos of the organza and the rest of the suit, and we’ll check from them that there’s enough before cutting. If you’d like us to supply the organza, describe the colour and we’ll confirm what’s possible in your written quote.

Common questions

How is organza joined to the kameez hem?

Usually with an enclosed, French or bound seam, so no raw edges or seam allowances show through the sheer fabric. The lower edge is then finished with a narrow hem, a facing or lace.

Can I combine organza and lace on the daman?

Yes. Lace along the bottom of the organza band, or over the join, is a popular combination. A lace of similar weight keeps the organza from being dragged out of shape.
