Square Neck Kameez: Width, Depth and Crisp Corners
Also called square gala
Quick answer
A square neck has straight sides and a straight front edge with neat corners. It adds width across the shoulders and frames an embroidered border or lace beautifully, so it’s popular for Eid and gatherings. The width, the depth and crisp corners are what make it look right.
What it is
The neckline drops straight down from the neck at each side and runs straight across the front. A narrow, deep square looks elegant and slightly vintage; a wider, shallower one looks open and summery.
Who and what it suits
- Long or narrow faces, narrow or sloping shoulders: the straight lines add width and balance.
- Embroidered neck pieces and borders: a straight edge shows a border without cutting through its pattern.
- Eid and gatherings: pairs well with lace or piping along the edge.
- Broad shoulders: choose a narrower square, as a very wide one exaggerates width.
Keeping the corners crisp
Square corners need precise cutting and a facing that is clipped and turned carefully, otherwise they round off or pucker. Crisp cambric and cotton hold corners best; soft lawn is fine with a good facing; sheer fabrics need a lined or bound edge.
Measurements that matter
Tell us the front neck depth and roughly how wide you want the square across the front, measured between the two corners. Your shoulder measurement limits how wide it can go before the straps sit too close to the edge of the shoulder.
How to ask for it
Choose “Square” on the stitching quote form and add the depth and width in the notes, plus any lace or piping. A photo of a square neck you like is the quickest way to agree the proportions.
Common questions
Does a square neck suit a round face?
It can, but a V or a round neck with a slit usually lengthens a round face more. A deeper, narrower square is the more flattering version if you love the shape.
Can lace be added along a square neck?
Yes. A straight lace edge follows a square neck very neatly. See our guide to necklines with lace.
