Boat Neck Kameez: Wide, Shallow and Elegant
Also called boat gala
Quick answer
A boat neck is wide and shallow, running almost straight from one shoulder to the other. It looks elegant on plain or lightly printed fabric and adds width to narrow shoulders. It depends more on your shoulder measurement than on depth, so a good fit across the shoulders is what stops it slipping.
What it is
Instead of dipping at the front, a boat neck stays high and runs wide, close to the shoulder line on both sides. The back is usually cut to match, so the neckline looks the same from the front and back.
Who and what it suits
- Narrow or sloping shoulders and long necks: the horizontal line adds width.
- Plain, pastel and small-print fabrics: the clean line is the feature.
- Not ideal for broad shoulders: a very wide boat neck exaggerates width.
Fit and fabric
Because the neckline sits close to the edge of the shoulder, an accurate shoulder measurement matters more than usual: too wide and it slips, too narrow and it looks like a round neck. Fabrics with some body, such as cambric, cotton and linen, keep the line straight; very soft lawn and chiffon need a firm facing.
Boat necks are wide enough to go over the head, so they rarely need an opening. Bra straps can show if the neck is very wide; tell us if you want it kept a little narrower.
How to ask for it
Choose “Boat” on the stitching quote form. Your shoulder measurement is essential; add a note if you want it narrower than a classic boat neck, and include a photo of the look you want.
Common questions
Will a boat neck slip off my shoulders?
Not if it’s cut to your shoulder measurement. If you’re between sizes or want extra security, ask for it slightly narrower.
Does a boat neck work under a dupatta?
Yes. It sits high, so it stays covered and neat under a dupatta draped over the shoulders.
