Sleeveless Kameez and Kurtis: Armholes, Finishing and Layering

Also called bina bazu

Quick answer

A sleeveless kameez has no sleeve at all; the armhole is finished neatly on its own with a facing, binding or piping. It’s cool for summer and makes a good base for layering under a shrug, jacket or cardigan. The fit of the armhole and shoulder matters more than usual, so accurate measurements make the difference.

What it is

Instead of a sleeve, the armhole edge is finished by itself. The shoulder can be the usual width, which covers the top of the shoulder, or cut in slightly for a narrower, more open look. Because nothing hangs from the armhole, its shape and finish are on show, so a smooth curve and a flat edge are what make it look well made.

Who and what it suits

  • Hot weather and home wear: the coolest option of all, especially in lawn and cotton.
  • Layering: under a long open jacket, a shrug or a cardigan, which changes the outfit without changing the kameez.
  • Casual summer co-ords: a sleeveless kurti with straight trousers or palazzos is simple and fresh; see our trouser styles.
  • A little more coverage: keeping the shoulder at full width gives a sleeveless look that covers more than a cut-in one.

Modesty and layering

Whether and where you wear sleeveless is your own choice. Some women wear it at home or at women-only gatherings, others only with a layer on top, and some prefer not to at all. If you like the clean line of a sleeveless design but want your arms covered when you go out, a fitted inner with long sleeves, a shrug or a long open jacket keeps the look while covering the arms. Our modest dressing guide shows how the pieces fit together.

Finishing and fit

The armhole is usually finished with a narrow facing, a bias binding or piping, and in sheer fabric a lining gives the cleanest edge. Crisp lawn, cotton and cambric keep a neat armhole; very soft or slippery fabrics need a firmer finish so the edge doesn’t stretch or roll. Stiff lace along the armhole can rub, so a soft lace or a lined edge is kinder to the skin.

The shoulder and armhole measurements do most of the work. An armhole cut too low shows your bra or inner at the side; one cut too high digs in. Tell us if you want the armhole kept higher for coverage, or if you’ll wear a particular inner underneath. Our armhole and shoulder fit guide explains the common problems.

How to ask for it

Choose “Sleeveless” under sleeves on the stitching quote form. In the notes, say whether you want the shoulder kept at full width or cut in, how the armhole should be finished, and whether you’ll wear it with a layer. A photo of the look you like helps us match it.

Common questions

Can I wear a sleeveless kameez modestly?

Yes, with a layer. A fitted inner with long sleeves, a shrug or a long open jacket covers the arms while keeping the clean line of the sleeveless design.

Will my bra straps show in a sleeveless kameez?

Not if the shoulder is kept wide enough and the armhole isn’t cut too low. Tell us if you want extra coverage at the shoulder or underarm and we’ll note it in your design approval.
