Why does my abaya slip back off my shoulders?

Abaya slipping off your shoulders or pulling at the neck? The usual causes, quick fixes at home and the measurements to send so the next abaya stays put.

The usual reason

An abaya slides backwards when its weight sits behind your shoulders instead of on top of them. Most often the shoulders are cut too wide, so the shoulder seam hangs past the edge of your shoulder and gravity pulls the whole garment back, dragging the neckline against your throat. A back that is heavier than the front, slippery fabric and a wide or low neckline make it worse.

The good news is that each cause leaves a clue, so you can usually tell which one you are dealing with by looking in a mirror for a minute.

Four causes and how to spot them

Stand side-on to a mirror with your arms relaxed and look at where the shoulder seam sits and which way the hem swings.

  • Shoulders too wide: the shoulder seam drops down your upper arm, and the front edges of an open abaya part as it slides. Common with one-size and drop-shoulder cuts.
  • A heavy back: embroidery, a hood, back pleats or extra flare at the back outweigh the front. The front hem rides up while the back hem touches the floor.
  • Slippery layers: a satin or silky abaya over a satin lining or a smooth inner dress has nothing to grip, so it slides whenever you move your arms.
  • Neckline too wide or too low: a boat neck or a deep V gives the garment no anchor at the base of the neck, especially when you carry a bag or wear a backpack that pulls the back downwards.

Quick fixes for the abaya you have

These are general home remedies rather than a service, and they work best on the slippery and open-front versions of the problem:

  • Pin or fasten the fronts together just below the collarbone with a brooch, a hijab pin or a sew-on press stud, so the two sides hold each other in place.
  • Wear a cotton or matte inner layer rather than a silky one, so there is some friction between the layers.
  • Carry your bag on your forearm or cross-body at the front rather than on one shoulder.
  • On an abaya with a heavy hood or back detail, a hidden hook and loop at the neck keeps the front from riding up.

Measurements that prevent it

A made-to-measure abaya avoids most of this, because the shoulders are cut to your own width and the balance between front and back is set for your posture. Send these with your order:

  • Shoulder width: across the back from one shoulder point to the other, the bony tip where the arm begins.
  • Front and back length: from the shoulder at the side of the neck to the floor in your usual shoes, both at the front and at the back. A difference between the two shows whether you need more length in front.
  • Neck: say whether you like the neckline close to the base of the neck. Our article on abaya collars and necklines shows the options.
  • Notes on posture: sloping or square shoulders, or a rounded upper back, are worth a line in your notes.

Using an abaya you own as a guide

If you have an abaya that stays in place, it is the most useful thing you can measure. Our guide to measuring an abaya you already own shows how to take the shoulder and length measurements flat, and how loose an abaya should be explains why a roomy body does not need wide shoulders. For the full set of numbers, follow the step-by-step guide on how to measure for an abaya.

We make abayas to measure and agree the measurements and design with you in writing before cutting. If the shoulders have always slid on ready-made abayas, say so on the quote form and we can suggest a closer neckline, a fastening at the chest or a lighter back detail.

Common questions

Why does my open abaya fall open and then slide back?

When the fronts are not held together, each side swings away from the body as you walk, and the weight moves behind the shoulders. A single fastening at chest height, or slightly narrower shoulders, usually stops both.

Can a hijab help keep an abaya in place?

A hijab pinned over the neckline can hold the front edges down a little, but it should not be doing the work. If the abaya only stays put when pinned to the hijab, the shoulders or the balance are probably off.

Is a dropped shoulder abaya always going to slip?

Not always. A dropped shoulder is a deliberate style, and it sits well when the neckline is close and the fabric has some grip. On slippery cloth with a wide neck it is more likely to slide.
