Beach abaya: a light cover-up for holidays by the sea

What makes a beach abaya work on holiday: fabrics that cope with salt, sand and sunscreen, opacity when damp, a sensible hem length and a front that is easy to open.

What a beach abaya needs to do

A beach abaya is a light, loose cover-up you can wear over swimwear or a simple outfit by the sea or the pool. The ideal one is breathable, dries quickly, stays opaque when damp, stops at the ankle rather than the sand, and opens easily at the front so you can slip it on and off without fuss.

That is a different brief from a travel abaya, which our article on modest holiday outfits touches on. By the water, salt, sand, sunscreen and wet ground do more damage than a long journey.

Fabrics that cope with salt, sand and sun cream

Light natural fabrics keep you cool in full sun. Cotton voile, lawn and linen breathe well, and linen in particular dries fast and softens with each wash. Our guide to linen and cotton abayas explains the differences in weight and creasing. Light polyester blends dry even faster and resist creasing, though they feel warmer in still air.

Each brings a trade-off at the beach.

  • Salt: rinse the abaya in fresh water after a day in sea spray, because dried salt stiffens fabric and can leave pale marks on dark colours.
  • Sand: a smooth, tight weave sheds sand with a shake; textured crepes and loose weaves hold on to it.
  • Sunscreen: some sun creams leave yellow or orange marks on pale fabric. Let cream sink in before dressing and wash marks promptly, following the label.
  • Strong sun: bright colours can fade with long exposure. Mid-tones and prints hide gradual fading better than a solid deep shade.

Opacity when damp

A fabric that is perfectly opaque when dry can turn see-through once it is damp from a wet swimsuit or spray. White, cream and pale pastels are the most likely to reveal what is underneath. Test any fabric before you rely on it: dampen a corner and hold it up to bright light.

A mid-tone, a soft print or a double layer at the front stays modest when wet. A light lining across the upper body is another option on very thin cotton.

Length and the front opening

On the beach, a floor-length hem drags through wet sand, picks up grit and gets heavy. Ankle length, or just above, is far more practical, and side slits to the knee make walking on soft sand easier.

An open front, a kimono-style abaya or a front with a few large snaps lets you put it on over wet swimwear without pulling anything over your head. Pockets are useful for a key card or sunglasses.

One safety note: a beach abaya is a cover-up, not something to swim in. Loose, long fabric becomes heavy and tangles in water, so take it off before swimming.

Ordering one for your trip

We make abayas to measure in a fabric we supply or one you send. Production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is added on top, so allow for both before your holiday. Tell us in the quote form that the abaya is for the beach, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

What colour beach abaya hides sand and salt marks?

Sand tones, soft greys, muted blues and small prints hide both far better than black or navy, which show every grain of sand and every dried salt line.

Can I wear my everyday abaya to the beach?

You can, but a heavy or dark abaya gets hot in direct sun and collects sand at the hem. A lighter, shorter cover-up is more comfortable for a full day by the water.

How do I pack a beach abaya?

Roll it rather than folding it, to reduce creases, and pack it in a cloth bag so it does not pick up sand from other things on the way home.
