Kimono abaya: wide sleeves, straight lines, easy layers

How a kimono abaya is cut, how it differs from a butterfly abaya, the front bands, belts and sleeve choices that change it, and how to ask for one made to measure.

What makes an abaya a kimono abaya

A kimono abaya borrows the outline of the Japanese kimono: a straight, almost rectangular body, wide sleeves that drop from a low or cut-on shoulder, and usually an open front edged with a flat band. Laid flat, it looks like a long letter T. Worn, it hangs straight from the shoulders and moves as one easy column.

It is a relaxed, modern shape that works open over an outfit or closed with a belt. Like every abaya style on this page, it is general fashion knowledge: if you want a kimono cut made to your measurements, describe it in your quote and we confirm what is possible on your fabric.

Kimono or butterfly?

Both have wide sleeves, so they are easy to mix up. The difference is where the width sits. In a butterfly abaya the sleeves and body are one continuous drape, joined only near the hem and wrist. In a kimono abaya the sleeve is a distinct, roughly square shape joined to a straight body, so there is a clear underarm and the sides fall straight down. The kimono is neater and easier for daily tasks; the butterfly is more fluid. Our butterfly abaya guide covers the other side of the comparison.

Front bands and closures

The front band is the signature detail of a kimono abaya, and it is a good place to add contrast or texture. Choices to consider:

  • Band width: a narrow band looks minimal; a wide one becomes a feature, especially in a contrast colour or a different fabric.
  • Fully open: the band runs from neck to hem and the abaya hangs open like a duster coat.
  • Tie belt: a self-fabric belt through side loops lets you close it and add shape at the waist. Our belted abaya guide explains the options.
  • Hidden snaps: a few press studs along the band let it look open while staying closed.
  • Wrap closure: one side crosses deeply over the other, close to a wrap abaya.

Sleeve length and width

Kimono sleeves can be full length to the wrist, three-quarter or elbow length. Wide three-quarter sleeves show a fitted inner sleeve or the cuff of the outfit underneath, which is a pretty layered look; full-length sleeves give the most coverage.

If you like the shape but find wide sleeves impractical, ask for them slightly narrower at the opening, or for a sleeve that tapers a little towards the wrist. You can also ask for a fitted under-sleeve stitched inside the wide one, so your arm stays covered when you reach up. The sleeve styles guide shows the range of shapes on a kameez.

Who it suits, and how to wear it

Because it falls straight from the shoulder, the kimono abaya suits most frames and is very comfortable for layering. It looks especially good on women with narrower shoulders, since the dropped shoulder line adds a little width. On a petite frame, keep the sleeves narrower and the band slim so the shape does not look oversized.

Worn open, it turns a plain dress, a kurta with palazzo trousers or a matching inner dress into a complete look. Worn belted, it reads as a neater, more defined abaya.

Asking for a kimono abaya

If you want to design your own abaya around the kimono shape, see our custom abayas page and the Send Your Design service: upload a sketch, a reference photo or a written description of the band, sleeves and closure you want. Start on the design quote form, then tell us whether you would like us to supply the fabric or whether you will send your own.

We reply with a written quote that confirms the design, fabric, measurements and total cost, including delivery to your door and any import duties or fees. Customers in the UK can read the UK page for how quotes and payment in pounds work. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment.

Common questions

What is a kimono abaya?

It is an abaya with a straight body and wide sleeves joined at a low or cut-on shoulder, usually open at the front with a flat band along the edge. It is inspired by the outline of the Japanese kimono.

Can a kimono abaya be worn closed?

Yes. A tie belt, hidden press studs or a deep wrap overlap all close the front. Say which you prefer when you ask for a quote.

Is a kimono abaya the same as a butterfly abaya?

No. A butterfly abaya is one continuous drape from wrist to side, while a kimono abaya has distinct wide sleeves on a straight body, with a clear underarm.
