Can a guest wear red to a Pakistani wedding?

Can you wear red to a Pakistani wedding as a guest? Skip it on the main wedding day, when red is the bride’s colour. Event by event, plus maroon, rust and pink.

The short answer

On the main wedding day, usually the barat, most guests avoid an all-red outfit, because red is still the traditional colour of the bride’s dress and many families notice when a guest matches her. On the other days of a Pakistani wedding, red is generally fine, and you will see plenty of it at a dholki or a mehndi.

Two things complicate the rule. Plenty of brides now choose gold, pink, ivory or pastels, in which case it is her colour, not red, that guests should steer clear of. And families differ: some do not mind at all, others feel strongly. If you are close enough to the family to have a group chat with them, ask. Nobody minds the question, and everyone minds the photo.

Event by event

Each event has its own mood, and our guide to wedding guest outfits for every event covers the outfits in full. For red specifically, this is how it usually works out:

  • Dholki: red is fine. These are relaxed singing nights, and bright colours of every kind are normal.
  • Mehndi: yellow, green and orange are the traditional palette, but red sits happily alongside them, whether as the whole outfit or as a dupatta. See our mehndi guest ideas.
  • Nikkah: if it is held on the barat day, treat it as the main day. If it is a separate ceremony, find out what the bride is wearing first, since some brides choose red for the nikkah itself.
  • Barat: skip a full red outfit. A red print on another ground colour, or red embroidery on navy or green, is usually acceptable.
  • Walima: red is usually fine, as brides often wear lighter shades for the walima. If you know her colour, avoid matching it. Our walima guest outfits article has more ideas.

Maroon, rust, pink and the shades in between

The closer a shade sits to the classic red a bride wears, the more care it needs on the main day. As a rough guide, darker and browner shades read as guest colours, while bright, clear reds read as the bride’s.

Colour names also shift between sellers and screens, so “maroon” on one website can be another shop’s “deep red”. If you are ordering, send a photo of the exact shade rather than relying on the name.

  • Maroon and wine: deep and slightly brown, so most families accept them even at a barat. Keep the embroidery lighter than you would on a party outfit, since heavy gold work on maroon starts to look like a wedding dress.
  • Rust and burnt orange: clearly a different colour from red, and handsome in autumn and winter.
  • Pink: hot pink is one of the commonest guest colours. Some brides choose pink, though, so check first.
  • Coral and peach: soft enough that nobody will confuse them with the bride.

It is not only the colour

What makes a guest look like a second bride is usually the whole combination: a deep red, dense gold embroidery all over, a long heavy dupatta draped over the head and a full skirt or gharara. Take two of those away and the outfit reads as a guest’s, even in a warm red.

That is useful if you love red. Choose it for the dholki or walima, keep the embroidery at a delicate or detailed level rather than all over, and wear the dupatta on one shoulder.

Ordering a guest outfit for the wedding

When you request a quote, tell us which event the outfit is for, send a photo of the colour you want and choose the embroidery level: delicate (neckline or sleeves), detailed (neckline, sleeves and hem) or statement for the evening events. Add the length you want and whether the dupatta should match or contrast. Embroidery, lace and borders can be added to outfits we stitch, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Our custom embroidery page explains the levels.

Making takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, and shipping time comes on top, so order the wedding outfits as soon as the dates are set.

Common questions

Can I wear white to a Pakistani wedding?

Plain white with no colour is avoided by some families because it is linked with mourning. Off-white or ivory with coloured embroidery is widely worn, especially at daytime events. If you are unsure, ask someone in the family.

Is black acceptable for a wedding guest?

Black is common at evening events such as a mehndi or reception, especially with coloured or metallic embroidery. A few older relatives still see it as a mourning colour, so think about who will be there.

What if the invitation gives a colour theme with red in it?

Follow the host. A theme is the family telling you what they want to see, and it overrides the usual custom.
