How many outfits should you pack for umrah?

How many clothes to take for umrah as a woman: a simple count by trip length and laundry access, with sets for the haram, travel days and the hotel.

The short answer

For a trip of about a week with some way to wash clothes, most women manage with four or five outfits for the haram, one outfit for travelling and one or two sets for the hotel. A longer trip needs only one or two more, provided you can do laundry. Without laundry, plan one haram outfit for each day you will be going there, and pack lighter fabrics to make that possible.

This article is about the count. Which kind of outfit to wear, and how much coverage your group expects, is a separate question; follow the guidance of your group leader or the scholar you rely on.

Three kinds of set, packed differently

Counting gets easier once you split your clothes by job, because each job needs a different number.

  • Haram sets: the outfits you walk, stand and pray in. They get the hardest wear and are washed most often, so they decide the size of your suitcase.
  • Travel set: what you wear on the flight and on coach journeys between cities. One is enough, worn again on the way home.
  • Hotel sets: something loose to rest and sleep in, and decent enough to answer the door or go down to breakfast. One or two.
  • A spare in your hand luggage: one full change, in case a suitcase is delayed.

A count by trip length

These figures assume you go to the haram once or twice a day and change after each long visit in hot weather. Adjust up if you sweat easily or the weather is very hot, and down if your hotel washes clothes quickly.

  • About five nights: three or four haram sets, one travel set, one hotel set.
  • A week to ten days: four or five haram sets, one travel set, one or two hotel sets, washing every two or three days.
  • Two weeks or more: five or six haram sets rotated with regular laundry. Packing more than that mostly adds weight.
  • No laundry at all: one haram set per day of visits, in the lightest fabric you are happy wearing.

Laundry and drying change the numbers

Many hotels near the haram offer a laundry service, and plenty of pilgrims rinse clothes in the bathroom sink. What matters then is how fast a fabric dries. In a dry, air-conditioned room, a fine cotton such as lawn, voile or a light polyester blend hung overnight is usually ready by morning. Thick cotton, khaddar and denim may not be. Our guide to drying clothes without fading or shrinking has tips that apply just as well in a hotel bathroom.

Choose prints or mid tones for the haram sets, because they hide the creases of a garment dried on a hanger. Pack a few clothes pegs and a short line or travel hangers; they take almost no space.

If you wear an abaya over your clothes

An abaya changes the count. Two are often enough for a week, one worn and one washed, and the clothes underneath can be lighter and simpler. Our travel abaya guide covers what makes an abaya easy on long journeys, and we make abayas to measure in our fabric or yours.

If you are having sets made before the trip, ask for loose cuts, full sleeves, a lighter fabric and no embroidery, and allow time: making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, and shipping is extra. You can request a quote for fabric and stitching and say in the notes that the clothes are for umrah.

Common questions

Do all my outfits have to be white?

Many women choose white or light colours for umrah because they feel cooler and look fresh, but customs and preferences vary. Ask your group leader what they suggest and pack accordingly.

Should I pack extra scarves?

Yes. Scarves and under-scarves get washed more often than anything else and dry quickly, so three or four take little room and save you from wearing a damp one.

What about socks?

Pack more pairs than days if you wear them, as they are the item most likely to get dirty quickly on marble floors and in shoe racks.
