White or black: what to wear to a Pakistani funeral
What to wear to a Pakistani funeral: plain white or muted colours in many families, black in others, always without shine and fully covered. How to ask if unsure.
InspirationCustom, not a single rule
Wear something plain, fully covering and without shine, in white, a pale muted colour or black, depending on the family. In many Pakistani and South Asian families, mourners wear plain white or soft light colours. In others, particularly among families settled in the UK and elsewhere, black or dark colours are usual. Neither is wrong; what matters is that the outfit is quiet and modest.
The funeral day is different from the visits that follow it. If you are going to the family’s home in the days afterwards, see what to wear to a condolence visit.
What every funeral outfit has in common
Whatever colour you choose, the same points apply.
- Full coverage: long sleeves, a kameez at knee length or longer, and loose trousers.
- A dupatta or scarf large enough to cover your head: women generally keep their heads covered throughout.
- Matte fabric: cotton, cambric, lawn or a plain wool blend. No satin, silk sheen, metallic thread or sequins.
- No embroidery to speak of: a plain suit, or one with tone-on-tone thread at most.
- Minimal jewellery and make-up: a watch and small studs are plenty.
White, pale colours or black
If the family follows the white or light custom, a white, off-white, light grey or beige suit is right, and a pale cambric holds its shape and is not see-through. If black is usual in their circle, a black or very dark navy suit with a black or grey dupatta is right. Muted mid tones such as grey, navy and dark green sit comfortably in either setting.
Avoid bright colours and busy prints whichever custom applies. Our article on tonal dressing shows how to build a calm, single-colour outfit from pieces you may already own.
Practical points for the day
Funerals involve standing, waiting and sometimes being outdoors in any weather. Whether women attend the janazah prayer or go to the graveyard varies between families and communities, so find out what is planned before you choose shoes and layers.
Flat, closed shoes cope with grass and gravel. In cold weather a plain dark coat or a shawl in a neutral colour over the suit is fine. In hot weather, a lined lawn suit keeps you covered without overheating. Carry tissues and a spare scarf in a small bag.
How to ask, and having a plain suit ready
If you are unsure, ask a relative, a friend of the family or the person who told you the news. A simple “Is the family wearing white?” is a normal question and nobody minds it. If you cannot ask, wear a plain muted colour, which fits almost every household.
For a funeral, wear what you already own; nobody expects anything new. If you would like a plain suit in the wardrobe for such times, our custom stitching service can make one to your measurements. Making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, plus shipping, so it is for planning ahead rather than a sudden need. Ask for a quote for a plain suit with no embroidery and a large dupatta.
Common questions
Can I wear a printed suit to a funeral?
A small, muted print in quiet colours is usually acceptable, but a plain suit is the safer choice. Avoid large, bright or festive prints.
I am not from a South Asian family. What should I wear?
Loose trousers or a long skirt, a long top with long sleeves, and a scarf to cover your hair, all in plain dark or muted colours. Follow what the women around you do.
Is a coat acceptable over a white suit?
Yes. In cold weather a plain coat in a neutral or dark colour is perfectly normal over a light suit.
