Tall women: custom lengths for kameez, trousers and dresses
Custom lengths for tall women: measuring kameez, sleeve, trouser and dress lengths, the rise and waist position, and checking an unstitched suit has enough fabric.
InspirationWhy tall women benefit from custom lengths
If you are tall, a shalwar kameez with custom lengths fixes the problems ready-made suits almost always have: sleeves that stop short of the wrist, a kameez that ends higher than the style intends, a waist that sits too high and trousers that flash the ankle. To get it right, measure every length on your own body, add the vertical positions of your waist and armhole, and check before you start that the fabric is long enough.
That last step matters as much as the measuring. Unstitched suits are cut for an average height, so a long kameez and full-length trousers for a tall woman can need more fabric than the pack holds.
Where ready-made goes wrong
Ready-made suits tend to fall short for tall women in the same places:
- Full sleeves that end above the wrist bone, especially when you reach forward.
- A knee-length kameez that lands mid-thigh instead.
- Waist shaping and the armhole sitting too high, so the kameez feels tight under the arms.
- Trousers that are short in the leg and short in the rise, pulling at the seat when you sit.
- A dupatta that looks small against a longer frame.
The lengths to measure
Kameez length: from the shoulder point beside your neck to where you want the hem, in your usual shoes. Sleeve length: from the shoulder point to the wrist with your arm slightly bent, so the sleeve still covers the wrist when you reach. Shoulder to waist: to a ribbon tied at your natural waist, so the shaping sits in the right place. Armhole depth: from the top of the shoulder down to the level of your armpit.
For trousers, give the length from the waist to where the hem should fall, and the rise, from the front waistband between the legs to the back waistband. A long leg with a short rise is the most common reason trousers feel wrong on tall women. The trouser size guide shows how to take both.
Check the fabric before you plan the style
The kameez piece in an unstitched suit is usually cut to a standard length. Your kameez needs your chosen length plus room for the hem and the shoulder seams, front and back, and wider fabric gives more room for sleeves. Our guides to fabric for a three-piece suit and fabric widths explain how the pieces are worked out.
If you are sending your own fabric, we check the quantity against your lengths before you post anything to us. If it is short, you can choose a shorter style, or pair the kameez with trousers in a matching plain fabric. With Fabric + Stitching, the fabric is bought for your measurements, so the question does not arise.
Proportions that look intentional
Height gives you a lot of freedom. A calf-length straight kameez over straight trousers looks elegant rather than overwhelming, and long, flowing shapes and maxi dresses suit you particularly well. If you prefer a shorter kurta, ask for it to finish clearly at the hip or mid-thigh so it reads as a choice rather than a garment that is too small.
For a dress or maxi, measure the full length from the shoulder to the floor in your shoes and decide the clearance above the floor; our article on measuring for a maxi dress walks through it.
Ordering custom lengths
Give every length on the form and add the waist, armhole and rise in the notes. For a long outfit in fabric we supply, start a Fabric + Stitching quote or read the Fabric + Stitching service. Customers in Canada can see how it works from there on the Canada fabric and stitching page. Lengths and design are agreed in writing before cutting.
Common questions
Can an unstitched suit be stitched long enough for a tall woman?
Often, but not always. It depends on the length of the kameez piece and the style you want. We check the fabric against your lengths before you post anything, and suggest options if it is short.
How should a tall woman measure sleeve length?
From the shoulder point to the wrist with the arm slightly bent. That way the sleeve still covers the wrist when you reach forward.
Why do my trousers feel short in the body as well as the leg?
Long legs often come with a longer rise. If the rise is too short, the trousers pull at the seat when you sit. Give us your rise measurement as well as your length.
