Cycling or riding pillion in an abaya: hems and wheels

Cycling in an abaya or riding pillion on a scooter or motorbike: keeping hems and sleeves clear of wheels and chains, closed fronts, cuffs and calm fabrics.

Yes, as long as nothing can reach a wheel

You can ride a bicycle, or sit pillion on a scooter or motorbike, in an abaya. The real risk is loose fabric reaching a wheel, a chain or a hot exhaust: cloth caught in spokes or a chain can stop a wheel or pull you off balance. A shorter hem, a closed front, cuffed sleeves and a fabric that hangs rather than billows do most of the work, and the rest is tucking away spare cloth before you set off.

On a bicycle

The chain sits on the right side of most bicycles, and that is where a trailing hem gets pulled in. The rear wheel is the other danger, because a flapping hem drops behind you as you pedal.

  • Length: mid-calf to ankle. Sit on a chair with one foot raised as if on a pedal and check that the hem still hangs clear of your foot.
  • Width: you need room to lift each knee. An A-line cut, or side slits with trousers beneath, stops a narrow abaya riding up over the knee.
  • A closed front, so the two halves cannot open and flap towards the front wheel.
  • Sleeves with cuffs, because wide sleeves catch on brake levers and gear shifters.
  • The bike itself: a chain guard and a guard over the rear wheel make long clothing much easier. Trouser clips keep the trousers underneath away from the chain.

Riding pillion on a scooter or motorbike

Riding behind someone, whether you sit astride or sideways, the hem and any scarf end hang on one side right beside the rear wheel. Gather the back of the hem into your lap or tuck it under you before the bike moves, and tuck in or pin shayla and dupatta ends so nothing trails. Long scarves pulled into wheels are a well-known cause of accidents.

Watch the exhaust as well. Polyester and other synthetics melt on contact with a hot pipe, leaving a hole or a hard patch, so keep the hem and your feet on the side away from it. If you wear a helmet, a smooth, close scarf underneath sits better than a bulky wrap. For more on driving and sitting for long spells, our travel abaya guide is useful.

Fabrics that stay put

Weight and weave decide whether an abaya hangs or flies. Denser fabrics such as crepe and many fabrics sold as nida hang down even in a breeze; see our guides to crepe abayas and nida fabric. Chiffon, georgette and layered styles lift with the slightest air, and a very full umbrella cut carries a lot of cloth that has to go somewhere when you sit. Keep those for days on foot.

Asking for a riding-friendly abaya

If you cycle or ride pillion regularly, put the details in your quote notes for a made-to-measure abaya: the length you want, slits or not, a closed front, cuffs, and any idea for holding the back hem up while riding, such as a loop and button inside. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Our guide to abaya sleeve styles helps you pick a sleeve that stays out of the way, and you can start your quote with a photo.

Common questions

Should I wear trousers under an abaya on a bike?

Most women do. Pedalling and sitting astride lift the hem, and loose trousers or leggings underneath keep you covered and let you pin back the abaya without worrying.

What should I do with my scarf on a scooter?

Tuck the ends inside the abaya or pin them flat so nothing hangs free near the wheel. A scarf that stays close round the head and neck is safer than one with long loose ends.

Do I need a special bicycle?

No, but a chain guard and a guard over the rear wheel make riding in long clothing much easier. Many city bikes already have both.
