Crepe abayas: texture, weight and drape explained

A crepe abaya hangs straight and swings as you walk. Learn how light, medium and heavy crepes differ, why crepe can drop after hanging, and how to care for it.

Why so many abayas are made in crepe

A crepe abaya hangs in long, straight lines, has a soft grainy texture that hides small marks, and moves with a gentle swing rather than a flutter. Crepe is not a fibre but a texture: the yarns are tightly twisted, or the weave is arranged, so that the surface looks finely pebbled. It can be made from polyester, viscose, silk, wool or blends, and that is why crepes range from almost sheer to quite heavy.

For abaya wearers, that variety is the point. Choose the weight first, then the fibre, and you will know roughly how the finished abaya will feel.

Light, medium and heavy crepe

  • Light crepe: thin and fluid, sometimes close to georgette. Cool in heat, but pale shades may need a lining.
  • Medium crepe: the everyday middle ground. Opaque in most colours, with enough weight to hang neatly and still comfortable in warm weather.
  • Heavy crepe: dense and weighty, with a smooth, almost matte face. It drapes beautifully and feels substantial, but it is warmer and heavier on the shoulders over a full-length garment.
  • Stretch crepe: includes a little elastane. Comfortable to move in, though stretch is less important in a loose abaya than in a fitted dress.
  • Crepe de chine: a fine, lightly lustrous crepe, traditionally silk and now often polyester. Elegant, slippery to sew and easily marked by water or heat.
  • Wool crepe: warm and springy, with a dry matte surface. Lovely for cold climates, but it needs gentle care.

How crepe hangs, and why the hem can drop

The weight that makes crepe hang so well also pulls on it. Over a long garment, panels cut at an angle to the weave can stretch slightly once the abaya has been hung for a while, so the hem settles a little longer in places. A careful maker allows for this by letting the cut pieces rest before hemming, or by checking the hem level against your measurements before it is finished.

Crepe also has a little natural give, which helps sleeves and shoulders feel easy. If you want a closer silhouette rather than a loose one, mention it in your notes; the weight of crepe means even a slightly closer cut still falls away from the body rather than clinging.

Crepe in heat and in cold

Light and medium polyester crepes are common for warm climates because they stay opaque without much thickness. Viscose crepe absorbs moisture better than polyester and feels cooler in humid heat, though it creases more and can shrink. Heavy crepe and wool crepe come into their own in colder places, where the extra weight keeps wind out and the abaya looks neat under a coat.

For a full comparison by climate, see our guides to Gulf summer heat and winter abayas for the UK and US. If you are in Doha, a light or medium crepe tends to be the comfortable choice for most of the year.

Caring for crepe

Always follow the label first. As a general rule, polyester crepe is easy to wash gently and dries fast, while viscose and wool crepes are more delicate and can shrink if washed warm or tumble dried. The textured surface can flatten or turn shiny under a hot iron, so press on the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the fabric, or use steam.

If you are sending your own crepe for stitching, ask the seller what it is made of, and read our guide to whether to pre-wash fabric before stitching. Our article on how to wash an abaya covers day-to-day cleaning.

Ordering a crepe abaya

For a made-to-measure crepe abaya, describe the crepe you have in mind (weight, sheen, colour, and whether you want warmth or coolness), and we propose a fabric with photos and descriptions in your quote, as part of Fabric + Stitching. If you already have crepe, the Stitching Only route for Qatar and every other country works the same way: photos first, our confirmation, then you post it.

Start your abaya quote here. Production takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, and shipping time to you is added on top.

Common questions

Is crepe a good fabric for an abaya?

Yes, crepe is one of the most popular abaya fabrics. It hangs straight, hides small marks with its textured surface and comes in weights from light to heavy, so it can suit hot or cold climates.

Is a crepe abaya heavy?

It depends on the crepe. Light and medium crepes are comfortable for everyday wear, while heavy and wool crepes feel more substantial and are better suited to cooler weather.

Does crepe shrink?

Polyester crepe rarely shrinks noticeably. Viscose and wool crepes can shrink if washed warm or tumble dried, so follow the care label and wash gently.
