Travel abayas: comfort on long journeys and easy packing

A good travel abaya: fabrics that resist creases and dry fast, zipped pockets, a length safe for escalators, layering for flights and colours that hide wear.

The abaya you live in on the road

A travel abaya is the hardest working piece in your suitcase. It is worn on a long flight, through airport security, on buses and in hotel lobbies, then washed in a sink and worn again. The ideal one comes out of a bag looking presentable, keeps your passport and phone close, and is comfortable whether the cabin is cold or the arrival city is hot.

Because a made-to-measure abaya is cut for your body, you can build those travel features in from the start. Our article on travel-friendly kurtas covers kameez and kurtas; this one is about the abaya itself.

Fabrics that pack and recover

For travel, the fabric decides almost everything. In general, crepe-type fabrics and some blends spring back after folding, while pure linen and fine cotton crease readily but breathe well and dry quickly. A matte surface hides creases better than a shiny one, and a small texture or a subtle weave hides them better still.

Rolling rather than folding an abaya in your case reduces hard creases. Tell us which matters more to you, a crease-resistant finish or maximum breathability for hot destinations, and we confirm a suitable fabric in the written quote. Our linen guide explains why linen creases and why many people do not mind.

Travel details worth asking for

Small practical choices make a big difference after ten hours in transit:

  • Zipped or deep pockets: a pocket deep enough for a passport, or one closed with a zip, keeps documents safe in crowded places. See adding pockets for where pockets can sit.
  • Length: a hem just above the ankle is safer on escalators, airport walkways and boat steps than a floor-sweeping one.
  • Sleeves: a cuff that closes with a snap keeps sleeves out of the way at security trays and washbasins.
  • Front fastening: an open abaya with a few concealed snaps can be worn closed in transit and open at the hotel.
  • Ease: a little extra room through the hips and back makes long hours in a seat more comfortable.

Layering for flights and changing climates

Aircraft cabins are cool, and arrival halls in the Gulf or South Asia are not. Plan the abaya as the outer layer of a simple system: a light inner dress or kurta and trousers underneath, the abaya on top, and a thin cardigan or wrap for the flight. The abaya should fit comfortably over those layers, so mention them when you measure. Our measuring help explains how to note extra layers.

Colour and care on the move

Mid and dark tones such as navy, charcoal, olive, taupe and black hide travel marks far better than pale shades. A print or a heathered fabric hides them even better, though most abayas are plain. Pack a small travel steamer if you will need to look pressed for meetings or family visits, and wash in cool water to keep colour from fading in hot-climate sun.

If you travel often, two abayas in the same comfortable cut but different colours let one dry while you wear the other.

Ordering a travel abaya

Tell us where you are going and how you travel, and we suggest a cut and fabric. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after you approve and pay for the quote, and shipping to your address is extra and varies by country, so order well ahead of your trip. Customers in Oman, for example, can read how ordering works on the Oman page, where the quote currency is agreed when you enquire, and the Oman Fabric + Stitching page covers what we supply. Start on the quote form.

Common questions

What fabric is good for a travel abaya?

A matte, crease-resistant fabric is easiest for travel because it recovers after packing. If you are going somewhere very hot, a breathable fabric such as linen or a cotton blend may suit better, accepting some creasing. We confirm the fabric in the written quote.

Can a travel abaya have zipped pockets?

You can ask for pockets, including a zipped or deep pocket, on your request. We confirm the details in the written quote before anything is cut.

Which colours are easiest for a travel abaya?

Mid and dark tones such as navy, charcoal, olive, taupe and black hide marks and creases from travel far better than pale shades.

How long should a travel abaya be?

Just above the ankle is practical for escalators, stairs and long walkways, while still looking long and graceful.
